... the sexy Lumia 800, a sleek steel-encased wonderphone :p Well, at least they're giving the Lumia good exposure... Will probably be in shops early April.

I just wish we get some of the other branded Windows phones as well, like those from Samsung and HTC, because the current Nokia phones is just ridiculous expensive.

There has been price cuts in India (http://tech2.in.com/news/smartphones/nokia-lumia-800-price-slashed-to-rs-23500/287092)and now also Malaysia (http://www.soyacincau.com/2012/04/02/nokia-lumia-800-rrp-slashed-to-rm1499/), so perhaps it will filter through to SA? Still not sure if I am going to get it. Depends on the price / deal and if reasonable on my contract, Plus not 100% sold on the touch screen for a phone. The good old fashion buttons work great. Pity they don't make one with a sliding keyboard...

Not really hey. 800 is a much nicer phone than the SGS was.

I also saw this 710 advertised but no stock yet, they claim it will all be coming in beginning May. They also said that the Galaxy Ace 2 would be coming which is a pretty decent phone as well. If they can bring it in at the same price I'll get either of those, with preference to the 710 I think...need to read up though.

So Nokia announce the availability of the phone in SA today at R3999. No it is just waiting for Vodacom and Cell C to make the phone available.

Is it not sad the sate of slowness that SA companies update their websites and the general lack of functionality you get there?

I'm checking the Vodacom upgrade site (http://vodacom.mobi/HTMLSite/Upgrade_login.asp) to see when deals are loaded. The 710 is showing but no deals attached yet, will keep you posted. BTW, I'm using an E52 atm, typically recharge once a week and like to keep my screen clean. Have a feeling we are going to have to wait until the May deals arrive on 8 May...

Our local Virgin Mobile store did have a phone on display and they have a deal attached to it. I did not checked out Cell C, the store was to busy.

I also asked Cellucity, the guys response: "Do you mean the Lumia 800?" So yeah, I guess they don't have stock either...

Might work for voice calls on low end tango devices, but none of the current devices from Nokia (exception Lumia 900) have a front facing camera so we cannot say whether it will still work during a video call?

The official supported requirements is 512mb RAM.

straatkat

Btw, the whole, not supporting a front facing camera in Windows phone 7 was really stupid. What is worst is that all the launch devices from Nokia runs windows phone 7.5 (which does support front facing cameras), yet none of them have front facing cameras. Considering that the Lumia 800 was build of the the N9, which does have a front facing camera, this is rather silly. Considering that my Nokia 6680 came with video calling and a front facing camera makes one cringe a little.

It will still work. If you have no ffc then it defaults to the back facing one.

Which is an awesome user experience...last time I checked the point of a video call is so that both people can see each other and that works best with a front facing camera. There are many things you can forgive a great innovative product, but lets not be stupid. Not having a front facing camera in this day and age is stupid, especially if you are the company that rolled out this tech many years ago, long before Facetime or the iPhone was even a concept with the Nokia 6680. Video calling over 3G was all the rage way back then. So Skype on 100% of Windows Phones in SA will be text only when you are realistic about it, unless you like to sit in front of a mirror when you call...

I get that people are passionate about a product. What frustrate me is when they are irrational about it.

didn't you realize that I quoted your first post, and not the second one? I agree with the second, but you seem to think I was arguing?
I was merely responding to you saying"we cannot say whether it will still work during a video call?" - which looks like you are questioning whether it will work with the remaining camera. Of course it will.

as for not having a ffc on most devices, they were very silly. Purely because they should have realized that people would call them out about it. from a usability perspective, the only time I have used my ffc was to test it. Same goes for my 3 previous phones that had one. And yes, I use Skype everyday.

straatkat
30-04-2012, 11:08 PM
Sorry, I misread your post. Bottom line is, unless you use Skype for messaging, it is not really that big of a deal, video calling is practically not feasible.

I also don't believe that it is the Windows Phone biggest problem, nor is it the lack of apps. For me personally it is the fact that you don't know what is going to happening down the road. With iphone you have a track record of Apple rolling out their iOS updates for a while. So the older devices gets added functionality. With Android it is a mixed bag. Some phones gets an upgrade others don't. Ice cream sandwich is a line in the sand. Most firms are only upgrading dual core devices. Everything else gets left behind.

With Windows Phone 7.5 everyone got updated, because lets be generous here. Windows 7 was a v1.0 release and Windows phone 7.5 was a version 1.1 release. Windows Phone 8 is something much bigger. Now what happen to your phone? What about security upgrades or fixes or software flaws? With older Nokia's like my E71 it got three software updates over the years. You get a Windows Phone device today, 6 months from now Windows phone 8 is all the rage...what then? That to me is where Microsoft needs to proof itself. We know the other two's track record. We also know pretty sure that Windows Phone 8 will be powered by the Windows 8 core and no longer the old CE core that is in there today. If you don't get updates to the platform on your device, what about apps, will the later apps work with Windows Phone 7.5? Microsoft is quick to comfort people by saying that Windows 7.5 apps will work on Windows Phone 8. Will the opposite be true? Will they continue to support Windows Phone 7.5
going forward?

with smart phones, you buy into an ecosystem. Is windows phone worth that investment?

roguemat

Yup, this is all true, and its going to be an interesting ride. I actually think they are doing a great job so far (except for their lack of communication).

WRT the updating, the only thing we have to base it on is Zune. The legacy Zunes still got updates right until the EOL of the Zune HD, which was rather surprising.
Guess only time will tell.

There are few software companies with a good a record of making sure that older hardware/software still has value.
MS is one of the exceptions - some MS OS based software from the 80's is still running on new hardare and/or Windows 7/XP/Me/8 ...

MS isn't going anywhere and despite all the bad press about Nokia, it's also not going down. iOS / Android took a few years to get where they are now. It's easy to use the changing market as supposed evidence for Nokias decline.
There simply is now more choice and 100/3 is obviously less that 100/1 (when iOS / Android didn't exist)

Hopefully this will also force Nokia/ MS to not make stupid decisions about not including FFC .... etc. etc. etc.

They could do that, because they build the devices and did all the work to certify each update. With Windows Phone, they just build the software. Every phone maker would then have to certify each of their devices (some times multiple versions of a device) and then the carriers need to sign it off for release. Every one of those steps can kill your update.

So even if Nokia decides to port it back to first gen devices, they might be selective, just like Samsung are selective about which of their galaxy products are getting Ice cream sandwich.

Smart money and thinking are that Windows Phone 8 will be just for new devices and thinking about the underlying changes inside I tend to agree.

I have a 4 year old Sony netbook running pre-release Windows 8. No installation problems and no compromises in existing hardware functionality. It may be that Windows phone 8 has some additional features that require newer hardware, but there is no real reason why older functionality will not be supported.

That is true for PC's because they are so standardise. So one fits all approach work for them.

For phones it is a whole different kettle of fish. There are no standardisation. One ARM CPU (even though same base design) is different from the next. There is no standard firmware, no standard board layout. Every phone is unique. for some phones you get multiple versions, so it could be all called a Lumia 800, but their could be three different versions and you need to certify every one of them each time you do an upgrade. It does not take long to realise that it is not that easy as the products get older. Considering that phones get refreshed as quickly as quarterly, this can be a lot of recertification very quickly. Going from windows phone 7 to 7.5 was easier, because you had just a handful of phones to do. There are probably three times that many devices now and counting...

A couple of thoughts about the windows phone:

The market place is not a great experience. Way to much junk in there. The "ebook" turned into apps is seriously uncool. The apple market experience is just so much better.

My other concern is the lack of definition of sms or mms. I simply don't know when the phone will be sending what or how many...unless I have missed something.

If you add a picture to a message, it will be an MMS.
If you type longer than 140 chars it will start counting at the bottom, and then longer than 160 chars and it will tell you "2 messages 182/306" etc.

The marketplace is a problem. I use Appflow (download it, its a great app), which pretty much filters out all the crap. That and seeing apps mentioned on WPCentral are pretty much my two sources - I rarely troll through all the sections. And I do think that the good apps are really good, with a high quality standard.

Seems like this is the more active thread and seems more general. I recently got a Lumia 800, problem is, Pulse, HoN stat Shower, and 9Gag Metro doesn't seem to work. This seems data related(though Marketplace, F1 Live and the standard ESPN app works fine). Am I missing something?
I'll download that Appflow app you mentioned, seems like a winner. Actually looking for some more apps to populate my phone.

edit: phew 12Mb

Oh that reminds me, another good reason to use AppFlow is that it shows US reviews. For most apps there are no SA reviews (which will show in the normal marketplace), so you can't see how good they are.

@Dr@g0nic I downloaded Pulse and 9gag, and both work fine. I'm on ADSL. I guess it must be something with your connection, and not to do with the phone. Can you browse in IE fine? Get Pocket Meme and see if it works :P

p.s. that 9gag app seems pretty useless, I'm sure there are better ones.

IE, F1 app, ESPN, most stuff works fine, dunno if it uses a different data type?

Lol I see why you want me to download Pocket Meme :P Too bad don't have a credit card, but I'm downloading the try out(but since I work for MTN and have a Voda contract it's quite slow in this building :P)

Haha :P The demo is pretty much the same as the full-version, so no worries.

Tested on wifi... works :/ (speaking of, wifi never connected on this phone till I changed router to DHCP, incase anybody else get this issue)
So wtf is up with my data connection that it decides to only work on certain apps.
