Openweb Gold vs Cybersmart for torrents

Option 2. The theoretical maximum you can get on a 1 Mbps line is around 270GB IIRC. I wouldn't know how much you can get from that account, but it shouldn't be too much less.

Also, do yourself a favour and move away from torrents. Apart from P2P being one of the most shaped protocols, there are just too many issues with torrents (and I'm not even talking about legal complications).

Hi everyone. I am trying to decide between 4 packages for downloading torrents and would appreciate some advice on which to choose.

1st up is OW Gold 384 unshaped uncapped. ISP R499 + Telkom R152 ADSL line + R139 landline making it R790 for about 95 gigs downloading 24/7 however adding R294 for electricity on a 620watt powersupply brings the grand total to R1084

2nd option is OW Gold Plus 1024 shaped uncapped. Price for ISP R449 + Telkom R289 ADSL line + R139 landline equals R877. How many gigs will I be able to download with torrents on this one? I dont know this ones speed and on torrents so I cant account for electricity.

3rd one Cybersmart 10 gig unshaped capped with nightrider giving an adequate 50gigs a month. ISP R372 if I have my ADSL line with them + Telkom R139 landline which brings it to R511 There is a once off setup fee of ONLY R275 which includes the following:
Free non-wireless router valued at R459
Pots filter valued at R35
Courier fee valued at R100
Setup of your router so that it automatically works when you receive it valued at R140

4th Cybersmart 10 gig unshaped capped with nightrider 50gigs a month. ISP R214 if ADSL line is with Telkom. + Telkom R289 ADSL line + R139 landline totalling R642 a month but without a router and extras as in the 3rd option.

Please help, my head hurts :D

Rather go with Web Africa for a capped account. Cybersmart aka Cybercrap isn't worth the hassles and their support sucks.

Go for the 1mbps line it will outperform any 384kbps shaped or unshaped. With openweb gold 384 you could download probaly 60-70 gig

Option two.

Dunno if you've already decided, but thought I'd weigh in.
I can't comment on Openweb, but I have been using Cybersmart on a 1 meg line for about 2 years now, doing LOTS of torrent downloads.
Works like a charm. ZERO shaping. Have run downloads at all hours, anytime, any day. Always get maximum speed, or very close to it.
That's the main reason I've never changed to uncapped, it's just too much money to spend to have limited access for most of the week (see the complaints about Mweb's shaping, for example).

Uncapped is about convenience. Life's to short to constantly check cap.

I'd rather keep an eye on my cap than, for exmaple, be totally unable to get any torrents at all on a public holiday (which has happened to me a couple of times using a friends Mweb uncapped). To have all that speed and you can't use it is FRUSTRATING.
I like that I can use my bandwidth whenever I want. Public holiday, home sick, day off - no throttling, no worries.
Oh, I'd much prefer uncapped, but at the moment, I'd rather have unshaped, since I'm forced to choose.

Or just do your torrenting the night before if you can't afford Openweb Gold. You should be able to get a good 20 gigs done at night.

I get what you're saying, as a capped user I have to schedule my heavy torrenting anyway. But sometimes you just wanna quickly download that movie, or the next couple of episodes of that new show you took the opportunity to watch since it's a day off. Spontaneous stuff, you know. But you can't. Cos uncapped accounts are throttled to death during the day.
Anyway, it comes down to personal usage needs - for me, a reasonably high cap, unshaped account is currently better than an uncapped, shaped account.
Oh, and did I mention cheaper? The thought of paying more to get throttled doesn't go down well

The Gold accounts on that were on special a few weeks back were good value. I picked up a 1 Mbps account for R339, normal price being R449. Not much more than a normal Mweb account.

Not so with GOLD :D

Seriously? Like zero throttling? Cos then I'll have to look into that.
Any idea what Openweb's contention ratios are like?
Well they say that they dynamically manage the account during office hours, but so far this month I'm yet to experience that. Been downloading 24/7 at full speed.

They don't say what their contention ratios are, just that Gold has a 25% lower contention than standard uncapped, and Gold+ has a 35% lower contention.

Plus you have the choice to switch backbone providers. I'm currently on the VB backbone and it absolutely flies with Usenet and P2P.

It's not zero shaping. Let's just call it minimal.
