Telkom locks out strikers after bonus offer rejected

The dispute centres on the sharing of profits. Telkom offers the lowest paid employees a bonus of R10000 each while CWU wants R50000 for each employee.

Wow. Makes me think of the draconian days before labour laws where in place and companies willy nilly decided what they wanted to do with their employees.

I would also love to receive a R10K bonus from my employer! What I really can't believe is the fact that this whole issue is turning out to be a internal fight among the pack on who's going to get the biggest pound of flesh that's ripped from the consumer-prey!

Microsoft is arguably one of the largest corporations in the world (in terms of revenue) - does that mean each MS employee is paid a kings ransom for working there?

I wouldn't mind as much if Telkom was actually providing a decent service for all the profit that they make from us - but sadly this is not the case. The only ones that are (IMO) suffering are the customers. As a direct result of this 'Industrial Action', I've recently discovered some of Telkom's pratices. An ADSL installation that was ordered on 20th Feb 2006 was finally supposed to be installed today (19/04/2006) after many failed attempts to move the date forward or even to get self-install organised. Anyhow, "due to the Industrial Action, the installation cannot be completed". The new date Telkom provides? 18th of May 2006!! I fail to see the logic of moving everything back a whole month as a result of a couple days strike. Imagine what would happen if the strike lasts a whole week - Telkom would shift everything back by 3 months LOL.

I hope government is proud of their baby, little Telkom ...

hehe same here, and that is for the "least paid employee" so say that person gets 2500pm, its like 4 times his monthly pay?? and they still decline it?????? my boss must tell me that i will work here for life

C'mon people, that's just plain ridiculous.
So now the country is going to get raped some more so that clueless Telkom employees can get their share of ripping us off. It's sickening.

Another way of looking at the situation is that the tampering / vandalism is at least highlighting the effect of Telkom on South Africa; we're stuck in a monopoly where Telkom provides all, so if Telkom can't maintain a happy workforce then South Africa suffers.

Government is refusing to relinquish their share of the undeserved profits earned through the blatant raping of the consumer; one could say that the mass action is a indication that the employess of Telkom have caught onto this and are "fairly" demanding that they also be given "fair" access to the unrightful gains of the corrupt situation (supported by Ivy of course). I guess in their view: what is "fair" for the CEO + senior management should also be "fair" for the general staff (it sucks as we lose either way in this argument).

Telkom are getting what they deserve if you ask me; I honestly hope things get worse & by worse and I mean major outages across the entire country for days if not weeks at length. I say let's see this situation escalate to proportions that IVY cannot ignore or sleep through : international attention and major corporate action is what is required to finally turn this sorry situation around.
