Telkom lays out fibre to-the-home plans

He went on to list three scenarios where Telkom would roll out fibre-to-the-home, or fibre-to-the-premises services:

Greenfield deployments: new estates and office parks;
Economically viable clusters such as office parks, residential buildings, and gated communities where it makes sense;
Areas with poor copper quality which would require significant reticulation investment to rehabilitate it and the business case makes sense.

So basically the average ADSL user has to still stick with ADSL....

I have yet to get 10mb where I live, so I guess basically this means they will be upgrading the current 10mb exchanges and supplementing their shorter VDSL loop requirements with the extra 1000 exchanges... not cool
 
Its good that they're actually THINKING of FTTH...
BUT they're still thinking about it the wrong way if you ask me.... Greenfields developments MUST have fibre installed by default, but residential areas where you can deploy and the people are prepared to pay.. then do it.. don't look at some short term "business case".. fibre brings all sorts of benefits with it if the concept is implemented properly.
 
When is Telkom going to realise the have a responsibility to the country to provide high quality internet access to allow for the development of the country.

Forget about business and start thinking about the future and where South Africa needs to get to to become a true first world country.
 
Can't even implement 10Mbps on the Rivonia exchange. And now they are thinking about fibre?

What universe do these people come from?

They'll do it at like 1 place in Sandton or Waterkloof, and charge people like R20 000 per month, so they can brag about their awesome world-class network and best fibre in Africa etc etc. Just like they did with 10mbps. Just like the cellphone networks with their "22 Mpbs" 3G networks which they split among 5000 people giving each the speed of an old snail on a winter morning.

It's all about the bragging rights.

I always wonder why people don't take FTTx (Or ADSL exchanges) into consideration when buying their property...
People consider how many coffee shops are within a 5 min walk, but then don't think about internet

Of course. It is something I, and many other people, consider when buying property.
Nothing wrong with that. Lifestyle is certainly a factor when purchasing.
I'm just saying FTTx should also be (And it was something I thought about)

That actually blows my mind... you chose a property based on how many coffee shops are nearby, not what type of schools, access to freeways,etc etc.. but coffeeshops.... (or at the least coffeeshops are higher on your list of priorities than the really important things)

How did you chose your property when FTTx is not even a reality in this country?

You are talking rubbish. I have FTTx.
And yes, lifestyle is a part of the decision buying process. So how many coffee shops are within a 5 min walk is most certainly a factor.
There are certainly many other considerations. FTTx, historical property price growth, local and provincial government, etc
Schools, in my situation, are not, as my children will go to a boarding school at a specific school. Not a school that I would live next to. But even so, children are not a consideration for my current house.
Freeways are also not a consideration, as they are rarely used.
But as I said, there are a variety of factors that people consider, FTTx should be one of them

maybe because we need a cost effective location or we dont have a choice because we are "deployed" by companies into ruatl areas.


Telkom should stop upgrading and offer basic ADSL to ALL customers.

FTTx can be replaced with ADSL/VDSL/copper anything - please. "normal" fibre is 1Gbps, that is easily over 10kms or more - what is copper based stuff maxing out at again?

JStrike you rocking NeoFibre or something else? Assume it is a complex and you guys are sharing in to a local exchange.

I don't think it is NeoFibre, as the fibre connection was done 3-4 years ago. It hooks up to specific ISP, whose name I don't remember offhand.
Yep, it's an apartment block. Fibre coming into the premises, and then ethernet to each apartment
I don't use it however, as I prefer the price of MWeb uncapped :-)
