Article: Pretoria street name changes will cost millions: Conrad Beyers

Pretoria street name changes will cost residents millions of rands, the Freedom Front Plus said on Friday.

"[They] now have to have addresses, business cards, maps, [and] marketing materials... changed at their own expense," FF Plus Tshwane council member Conrad Beyers said in a statement.
 
Rather feed the street kids.

The people in government who want street names changes probably have family members in the signage industry.
If they want names changed, let them foot the bill with their own money.

I'd rather they not feed the street kids. Rather do something sustainable about the problem than treating the symptoms and creating a system which needs handouts.

Take an example of Genl Louis Botha.... the guy fought against the British. He didn't do anything "wrong".
They wanted to change Paul Kruger Street.... wtf did he do?

Why Humiliating? You should walk with pride. I think people like to be victims of their own imaginations. We won. How good does it not feel to take a leak on HF Verwoerd Drive.

I honestly do not get why you would be humiliated. Its something to be proud of. Looky Verwoed Turn in your grave here I am. I won. You can do f all about it.

I just think they should name streets general stuff and make it in the Local Language.( Like horse sheep car) We will in no time be familiar with the 11 languages. Stop naming it after people. Unless they are 100 or more years dead.

What's hard to understand is repeating the mistakes of the past. Why politicize the street names? Rename them to something neutral that will offend nobody. I personally find it offensive that roads are named after people who planted bombs in bars and restaurants.

I'd like them to explain why they changed the names in PMB, because street names "commercial", "loop", "durban" (and i think "alexander" as well?) are so utterly offenvice and deserve millions spent to change them.

Take the money and pay the teachers/build schools in the eastern cape rather.

Well, Durbs went batcrap crazy on the renaming - now I get to drive over dead terrorists without the need to clean the gunk out of my grill. A win!
 
This was my objection here in Cape Town to the changing of Jan Smuts Drive to Dullah Omar Drive.
The objection process was a simple online form to fill in.

Jan Smuts was one of South Africa's greatest statesmen, one of the founding members of the League of Nations, wrote the preamble to the United Nations Charter amongst many other great achievements. He established the Fagan Commission and it is of historic opinion that had he not lost the election in 1948 Apartheid as we know it may never of existed. I am sure there is some other road in Cape Town we can call Dullah Omar Drive. Perhaps the extension to the R300 through Philippi whenever it is completed? Jan Smuts Drive should remain as Jan Smuts Drive and his life and accomplishments should be taught at Schools to educate people on this great man. It would be a travesty if his name was removed as was similarly done to Jan Smuts International Airport, we may not have that many airports to name people after, but there are thousand of roads. Jan Smuts must remain please.

Proposed (new) name:: Dullar Omah Drive

What was their reason or logic behind changing Jan Smuts?

Busy with a Business Management module and while my history background is not brilliant, the authors made a point (wrt leadership) that Jan Smuts was a good influence on our country...

Hi froot. Thanks for your comment. In my opinion Jan Smuts was the last good statesman we had in this country.
In regards to their reasoning in changing this specific name I am not sure as I did not read enough material on the name changing process. Furthermore it would be better if we could simply name roads after plants, birds or a name that gives credit to its location, like Klip Road in Grassy Park for example, must be the only or one of a few streets on the Cape Flats (sand) that has this huge round rock sticking out on the side of the road and the name Klip (stone) best describes this road.
People die and the generations following on have no clue as to people's names, like Jan Smuts for example as he died a couple of generations ago. The same could be said for Dullah Omar, in 60 years time nobody will know who he was, unless they studied history, but like the Klip (stone) Road example, that rock will be there forever and everyone passing that landmark will be able to relate to the roads name.
