That's one good thing about the ANC government - they're probably too incompetent to carry out ideas like this.

Under legislation expected in next month's Queen's Speech, internet companies will be instructed to install hardware enabling GCHQ – the Government's electronic "listening" agency – to examine "on demand" any phone call made, text message and email sent, and website accessed in "real time", The Sunday Times reported.

A previous attempt to introduce a similar law was abandoned by the former Labour government in 2006 in the face of fierce opposition.
However ministers believe it is essential that the police and security services have access to such communications data in order to tackle terrorism and protect the public.

Although GCHQ would not be able to access the content of such communications without a warrant, the legislation would enable it to trace people individuals or groups are in contact with, and how often and for how long they are in communication.

The Home Office confirmed that ministers were intending to legislate "as soon as parliamentary time allows".

I did notice the date...but I looked at the comments on the article and they all seemed pretty serious to me?

The protection the public really need is protection from the government.
 
People should not fear their governments. Governments should fear the people! ;)
 
Well if you are going to run a terrorist or prostitution ring... might I suggest using encryption. If you dont run that type of business... you should be fine.
 
All this will achieve is to encourage the use of SSL and encryption for everything, legal and illegal - so the agencies will be worse off than before because they won't be able to decrypt ANYTHING.
 
There are local elections next month. The major political parties are pissing in their pants. The tories stumble from one screw-up to the next and all Labour can do is film their leaders buying sausage rolls and pasties trying look like the "ordinary man".

There is no way the media will let them get away with this :D labour tried it before.
