Johannesburg - A mystery man could hold the key to finally resolving what really happened to murdered student Leigh Matthews, a report said on Monday.

Information about a man named “Silvanus” was brought to eblockwatch - an online neighbourhood watch - by an anonymous source who appears to have information on the Matthews murder and wants to clear his conscience, The Star reported on Monday.

“We don’t know who he [the source] is, but we are convinced he is genuine and he has promised to give us more,” said eblockwatch creator and owner Andre Snyman. “For all we know, it could be [Silvanus] himself who is speaking.”

The online group with 80 000 members has been actively involved with the Matthews case since her disappearance first made headlines. She was abducted on 9 July 2004.

Leigh’s father, Rob Matthews welcomed the news and said “it fits with what we know”.

“I suppose it’s okay to say, because the information is already in the public domain, but we believe it’s linked to the guy on the bridge,” The Star quoted Matthews as saying.

He was referring to information published by Piet Byleveld in his book, in which he mentions how he used cellphone records to place a friend of Moodley's on a bridge over the ransom drop-off point.

Donovan Moodley is the only person who has been convicted for the kidnapping and murder.

The judge who jailed him, Joop Labuschagne, ruled that accomplices were still walking free.

I know one of the ex-investigators of this case and even he said there were more people involved.
 
if there is enough proof one or more should join Donavan in jail! plus Donavan should extra several years jail for lying in court.
 
What was the reason that Donovan never implicated the accomplices?
Surely can't only be fear?
 
This is wonderful news.

I just think that it is not the best tactic of Andre Snyman announcing it on FB. That will simply scare away the accomplices.

By all means, announce it AFTER the fact, but not while you are still investigating. There is a reason why police often refuse to divulge information relating to an an-going investigation.

Piet Byleveld also said he will not rest till they are all behind bars. He will assist with this at the drop of a hat.

Fully agree, it was a stupid move.
 
Moodley has no rights, not even the right to live, he should be forced to talk no matter what it takes IMO.

It probably means he's got nothing - just ruffling the bushes hoping to startle off some game. Who is this Andre Snyman anyway?

Does anyone know if eblockwatch have had successes in the past? They come across as a tad vigilante. I may be wrong, though, I just sense a gung-ho attitude.

If Byleveldt could not manage to nail the accessories, chances are this organisation will not either - unless an accomplice decided to speak up and confess.

I haven't noticed anything much to boast about.

I removed myself from their group when, as soon as this Oscar crap got underway, they all started changing their avatars in support of the snot-nosed little liar.

Their phone app also doesn't work.

Yes, they are actually very good at tracing missing persons and hijacked individuals, especially if you have given them permission to track you (by means of a panic button code that is activated on your phone). They are also well respected with the police as assisting in a number of investigations.

This is also true and they do come across that way, it is the only thing that irks me, but I am still of the opinion that the possible benefits outweigh the bad.
In a hijack situation, I would rather have spent R60 a month for the safety of my family, than to have regrets about not doing anything at that point in time.
When an incident goes down, it goes out to all the members in that area and the members all become the eyes and the ears on the ground, it is a very successful method.

I actually agree with you... it also concerns me now that any Joe Shmoe can just get on there and make a bunch of baseless accusations... how are they going to vett this stuff?
And what about admissibility? If this was evidence made public first, it might be treated as prejudiced in court.
