I'd like to see how many people at one time in the same high-rise building the tests were run from, were using the internet at that point. It's all good and well that you have access to 1gbps, but it doesn't mean you're the only one using it. So if you guys can confirm that this was a single connection for a single user, then I'd be "impressed"

Also keep in mind, the bottleneck here isn't Hong Kong, but it's destination. If you look at Australia for example (a country I'd say is worse off than South Africa, if you take the "international bandwidth is expensive because we're at the tip of Africa" excuse in recent years), I'm willing to bet the low speeds is because of the destination, and not the origin.
 
What I am wondering:

Was he using a hotels free internet connection? They are generally not that great, or was he testing with some company connection? Having used hotel internet connections in a couple of European countries, I can tell you that the bandwidth is not good enough to even do a sustained VOIP call on.

If we bring this into context, what is the average speed test that you would get on a big companies LAN? Or on a hotel internet connection?

The comparison is done with apples and oranges. We are comparing top of the line ADSL with company bandwidth. I am a consultant who plug into many corporate network and the average speed is not even close to 200KB/sec (200KB/sec being the best I have seen), therefore Hong Kong is far ahead of our speeds.

This comparison is just ludicrous from my point of view and serves no purpose but allowing Telkom to once again state how internationally competitive their bandwidth is.

I just made a comment on the article page, because its impossible that they used SA ADSL users for sample data, because we're not able to upload at anything more than 1Mbps !

If they used Fiber / HSDPA / LTE results too, then there's a small chance that the results could be true for SA.

When i was there i was on a 40M line and got 36M or so on speedtest.

Also got to consider delivery, they can delivery 40M to everyone in HK, where here even if u can pay for the service, they can't deliver.

40M uncapped is also like R200 in Hong Kong.
 
Average upload speed of of 3.82mbps has to be wrong. rpm is this a typo?
 
lol. Just because his laptop sync'd at 1Gb in his hotel does not make it a 1Gb connection.
 
I'd be interested to know what percentage of customers in SA actually have 10 mbps ADSL?

Hong Kong was faster than SA, I was not surprised.Can I get my money back? Did you go all the way to Hong Kong to find that out?

What??!! You mean when I plug in my laptop in at home and it connects at 1Gbs to my router I am not getting a 1Gbs Internet connection? :D

Never trust a MD of a company that wants to tell you that your **** 10Mb connection is the same as a 1Gb connection, especially when that 1Gb connection costs around R200 per month for someone in HK.
 
Fact, few people in SA have 10mbsp ADSL connections, while many, very many people in HK have 1GBPS connections. By May 2011 HKBN already had 10000+ 1GBPS subscribers and it's grown substantially since...

For the real picture, go to http://www.akamai.com/stateoftheinternet/ then plot Hong Kong vs. South Africa on the Data Visualization tool, some key figures as of Q3 2011:

Broadband Adoption, 2mbps > : HK: 93% SA: 23%
Broadband Adoption, 5 mbps > : HK: 60% SA: 2.6%
Avr Peak Conn Speed: HK: 46045kbps SA: 5749kbps
Avr Conn Speed: HK: 10534kbps SA: 1623kbps

Then comparing their broadband growth to ours paints a trully ugly picture, HK shows conn speed growth in mbps, while SA operates in 100kbps or less increments for the same period!

Sorry MyBB, there is zilch comparison!
