Vodacom and MTN quiet on Knott-Craig at Cell C

Probably waiting to see which way the wind blows...

I think we can take our cue from that...

Yip I can see it now,he's going to let it progress the way the market wants it,sell the data and let the voip take care of most calls.

Not a bad strategy at all if he does it right cell c may just be the new big boy on the block come next few years.

Knott-Craig said that Vodacom and MTN have more to lose in a low margin, high volume environment dominated by data – especially if voice over data services start to become popular

Well, maybe if someone were to offer it, it would become popular. Hell, I had a skype call with my father (who is in Amsterdam) using my smartphone and headset while driving on the N2 out of CT. VC your data network is better than it was a few months ago for this purpose. Please now try sort out the points along that route where I ALWAYS get a voice and data interrupt (Baden Powell or near there, R300 exit, Airport Exit, Pinelands exit and Hospital Bend).

Cell C - R30 p/GB data bundles with Neotel call rates using VOIP would be a nice starting point. Especially if I can use a VOIP client on my laptop/PC/IP phone over my fixed data connection when I like.

The problem is people are generally entrenched in their service provider. They don't wanna go through the hassle of porting or switching numbers. Cell C had tremendous specials on data, which failed to lure away millions from MTN and Vodacom. Since their promotions have ended, they're not quite the automatic choice anymore. They're still competitive, but I'm more excited about 8ta's offerings at the moment.

My company made a killing on those specials... you under estimate them. Seriously, I sold 800% more cellc data sims than I did Vodacom. I hardly sold any vodacom data. Everyone and the kitchen sink wanted CellC in this area an now its harder than hens teeth to find.

All those specials were only for new sims and thus new numbers. People just kept their main number as Vodacom/MTN since there was no reason to port to CellC to make use of the special. Once the special ended, things were just like it used to be. Vodacom/MTN didn't lose many subscribers.

If there is a decent special which can be used on existing sims then people would feel more obliged to port and stay on a network. We need cheap data that can be added onto current sims, prepaid or contract. i.e. more deals like 8ta's, 3GB for R150. Also, it must not be a one month wonder special like Vodacom/MTN normally do. In order for people to port the price needs to drop for at least 6 months or a year.

True dat ,I myslf dnt trust n knw much about the two smaller companies network performance.

Most of them are just used for data and go into a modem. I would be surprised if 2% of the clients that purchased those data cards even cared what their number was.

so why would they comment in the first place. They do not have a worry in the world. People will not go to them. The people like me that went to cell c for data has maybe 1 year left. You can still get the 149 deal at vodacom. MTn and vodacom has the numbers.
I do not care about their callcentre beeing better or the staff at the shop beeing better. All call centres are really *****. I want a good deal. cheap voice, bigger cap.

Count me in.

I used mine for data only, didn't cared about my number. As long as it worked, I was happy :)

The only way to get cheap voice and bigger cap is to vote with your wallet.

If you don't vote with your wallet, then the fatcat will only get fatter.

Note to AKC:

If you want to achieve your goal of 25 % market share, go back to selling 5 and 10 GB data packages at reasonable prices. I, and all my friends, will be back with Cell C in a flash if they go back to providing data at reasonable prices.

That's just the thing. CellC didn't gain much market share by offering data deals on new numbers only. So it was a pointless excercise for them in the long term. Good for us for a short while but not good for them.

While that may attract a few data users, it does not add much to the bottom line. Voice, especially prepaid, is where it is at!

Contract users are good for annuity income...

Unless they switch to VOIP and Neotel rates...
