Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney pounced Friday after weaker than expected jobs data cast doubt on the health of the economic rebound that President Barack Obama hopes to ride to reelection.

"It is increasingly clear the Obama economy is not working and that after three years in office the president's excuses have run out," Romney said, hitting a theme underpinning his bid to evict Obama after a single term.

I have thought about this USA situation. Obama did not inherit a very good situation.
Never the less.
Would our next president ( in SA ) be able to put things right. Or will he ( say its a great honest person with great moral fibre, yeah I know I live in lala land :o) fail due to the mess the current people are making and the world economy?

Just asking. Looking at the hopes people put in Obama, will the same not happen here in years to come?
 
Unemployment rate of 8.2%.

Reuters) - American employers hit the brakes on hiring last month, and even a drop in the unemployment rate looked concerning because of a sharp drop in the size of the workforce.

U.S. employers added just 120,000 people to payrolls last month and the unemployment rate eased lower to 8.2 percent, the Labor Department said on Friday.

The slowdown in payroll additions was lower than even the most pessimistic forecast in a Reuters poll.

Following are some key details from the report:

* The fall in the unemployment rate was actually a bad sign for the economy. The jobless rate dropped because workers were exiting the workforce, possibly because they were discouraged at job prospects although some likely were retiring as well. The workforce shrank by 164,000 people. The participation rate, which is the percent of the population in the workforce, fell to 63.8 percent from 63.9 percent in February. Like the jobless rate, the participation rate is derived from the household survey, while the main payroll jobs measure is from a survey of employers.

* However, in a sign not all workers leaving the workforce did so because of discouragement, the Labor Department's broader U-6 measure of unemployment, which includes people who want a job but haven't looked in the last month and part-time workers who want to work full time, fell to 14.5 percent from 14.9 percent. That takes a bit of the edge off the fall in the participation rate.

* It's not clear how much weather may have played a role in the slowdown in hiring. Jobs in construction shrank by 7,000, marking the second straight month of losses. That boosts the view that some of the increase in hiring during the mild winter might lead to a pullback in during the spring. Retail jobs also took a big hit, shrinking by 33,800. At the same time, there were some signs that mild weather in March continued to help employment. The number of people with jobs but who weren't working because of bad weather was only 96,000. That was the lowest reading for a March since 2000.

* Casting another shadow over the outlook for hiring, the length of the average work week fell to 34.5 hours from 34.6 hours. That suggests employers might be able to squeeze a bit more out of their existing staff, leaving them less likely to hire in the future.

* Also boding poorly for future hiring, employers cut hiring of temporary workers. Employers cut 7,500 temps last month. Companies often hire temps to test the waters before adding people directly to their payrolls. The water appeared to be on the cold side in March.

During campaign appearances in 2008, Americans were swept off their feet (some quite literally if you take into account the swooning women) with the idea of "hope and change." In almost childlike faith, people grabbed on to the promise that then Senator Barack Obama was a different kind of politician who promised to be the proverbial tie binding us together in unity. Red and Blue would fade away into purple as we laid down our individualism in pursuit of "the greater good." Believing a new day had dawned on American politics, the awestruck responded to one of the greatest marketing ruses in American history with a hearty: "Dude, this whole hope and change thing is definitely the way to go."

Now let's get real. Decision after reversed decision like the administration's recent choice to ditch its (supposed) "core values" in support of the pro-Obama Super PAC, "Priorities USA Action" pretty much betrays everything that President Obama said he stood for. Liberals think this fundamental change of position is acceptable because "all is fair in love and war" -- and Chicago politics.

To be fair, the GOP pretty much owns the whole Super PAC concept and the morality of Super PACs within the campaign fundraising system is another issue for another day. The matter at hand (literally) is that every time President Obama decides to point a finger at his opponents, there are three fingers pointing back in his direction.

To be clear, Obama was against Super PACs before he was for them, just like he was for public funding of campaigns before he was against it. In June 2008, Obama detached himself from his own words (and hoped we would as well) when he did an about-face regarding his campaign finance stance. He gave us a squeaky-clean window with which to peer through when, in a video message, he expressed his condolences for the necessity to change his position. Promising it was "not an easy decision" to make because he still supported "a robust system of public financing of elections," Obama claimed it was a decision driven by necessity. The public financing of presidential elections as it exists today is broken," Obama complained, "and we face opponents who've become masters at gaming this broken system."

After much bloviating, Obama stepped down from his soapbox and became part of what he described as the "broken system" when he opted out of public campaign financing - and the naïve blindly followed in lockstep -- because that is how Chicago rolls.

In favour of not worshipping Israel perhaps, and not giving them free reign to do whatever they please. Which has been the general status to date.
