If my motherboard is bust - is it easy to get a new MB and pop my old chip in?
Or obsolete?
 
Just swap the MB out.
You can still get LGA775 socket motherboards.

What make & model MB do you currently have?

^^ What he says... you might have to purchase new memory to go with the new 775 board, depends how old your current one is.

As ponder says... what make and model you have at the moment... ?
 
Asus P5QC

I'm still dunno the issue - but if it's just that, it's ok I guess. Think if I take it to PCInt and buy a board for them, theyd put my chip in with that paste at a reasonable free?

Last time I took it to the techy at work, he fscked it up :(
 
asus have 3 years warranty you can rma direct at asus in jhb, if you have warranty :)

no need for pop, just need a serial number
 
LGA775 mobo's are limited nowadays, PC Int will probably only stock the Asus G43 ones which are entry level with 2 x RAM slots and 4 x SATA ports.

Further the problem is they're all DDR3 RAM based now, and your P5QC uses DDR2 RAM IIRC.

So perhaps best looking at a second-hand LGA775 mobo with DDR2 RAM, more SATA ports, etc.

Yea, the P5QC took DDR2 and DD3 - but DDR3 was expensive back. So if I'm lucky enough to get a new 775, I'll need new RAM too. Seems second hand is tough to find (although there's a P5QC that was listed and sold 3 weeks back on MyBB!)
 
You don't know whether your MB is broken, everything so far indicates the HDD.
 
Might as well do it yourself so at least you know it was done properly.
