TV/Entertainment sound advice

Hi

I want to add some better sound to my lounge.
I have a Sinotec 46" telly on a plasma/lcd stand. I also have a HDPVR / Med8er / PS3 / DVD player there. No hifi or sound system.
I use the Mede8er quite a bit to play music and movies.

What are my sound upgrade options considering a minimalist approach.
I am not interested in a multitude of speakers front back left right etc,etc with wires everywhere.

I've been looking on the interwebz at 'soundbars'.

Any recommendations on the local front would be appreciated, and what should i be paying for a mid range setup.

Seriously, anyone have any experience with soundbars?
 
Do you listen to music most? Or prefer better sound for movies?

And most importantly, what is your budget?

A good pair of stereo speakers might be a better bet instead of a soundbar, as you can always upgrade when you decide that you want to extend to a 5.1 system.
