IP and patenting – guard it!

Patents are to innovation what piranhas are to a cow swimming across the river. Copyright is to creativity what sharks are to a swimmer with a cut on their leg.
 
But how much does it cost to patent some technology developed? The problem we face in SA in particular with IT dev patents is that it will be prohibitively expensive & large corporates in the US will copy and an idea and quickly integrate into their existing products. e.g. 4sq vs fb checkin's, or think groupon vs fb + google + plethora of copy cat sites etc great idea's often can't be patented and a larger corp can quickly make a lot more off your idea.

2ndly have you seen some of the copyrights passed, being processed and being fought over in the US? It makes a mockery of things, heck it's like someone can patent breaking and sue everyone breathing lmao.

You forget patent searches, document formulation etc. Of course, you could do all that yourself but results not guaranteed then.
