Article: South Africa under tsunami watch

According to the Council for Geoscience South Africa was under tsunami watch but there was no need to panic, the SA Weather Service said on Wednesday.

A tsunami watch meant that it was aware of the warning but that no immediate action was required, SA Weather Service official Hannelee Doubell said.

What the hell is a tsunami watch? Is that like 4 guys in a helicopter above Durban Beach Front watching Wimpy being flooded away going "Yip...that was a tsunami..."

I love these over the top warnings...

Bwahaha. I'd think it would be 2 guys in a helicopter. Times are tough.

we are protected by madagascar, so the island would get the wave before any coast off south africa does.

Even last time (2009?) we only got some "heavy waves" in the Durban region. So yeah, we're probably mostly safe.

To a degree yes... But Madagascar doesn't cover the entire coast of South Africa's Eastern Side...

Regardless though, i don't even think we will see ANY kind of difference in sea levels here. It barely did anything right next to where it originated from, never mind all the way across the Indian :)

Made it back to the hotel here in Phuket. They evacuated Patong and closed the roads to Karon and Kata.

That tsunami's lucky. I can picture you losing your marbles and having a temper tantrum on the beach as the tsunami hit, screaming "I'mma gonna kick ya in da panty for fsck sakes. ARGH!!!"
