Cut ADSL line rental prices says Rudi Jansen

That is common sense. What is indicative of how broken SA ADSL is currently that only a FORMER CEO of a tier 1 ISP will suggest it. All the tier 1 are so dependent on Telkom that won't in public mention the obvious in case they offend Telkom.
 
Just give the man a jonny blue already. He must be thirsty for fighting for our broadband for so long.

I vote Rudi for president.
 
I wish they would hire him at Telkom, he has proved to not be scared when it comes to tough decisions. Imagine trying to sell the idea of uncapped to Naspers...

You've clearly not met many of the Naspers board. It would go more like this...

How many years has the MWEB former CEO had this "free the web campaign"?

Ive given up, telkom will not lower they prices, people must just accept it and move on.
 
Now that Rudi has time on his hands, maybe he can do some investigative work for us - to help us "Free The Web".

Rudi: how much does it really cost Telkom to provide and maintain the last mile access network? Is Telkom lying when they say that it is not profitable? Is there really an Access Deficit or is Telkom blowing smoke up our asses?

Can you really see it being an easy sell? Look at the figures for the IPC bandwidth, international and all the other costs involved. Then try get the board of a company not exactly known for cheap options to change the entire game plan because you think it will win? I doubt it.

The real reason they probably went for it was due to Naspers VoD services and needing to get the network ready for this and also being able to shift VoD customers on to their own national links.
 
I recently talked to a Telkom employee, who said that he cannot justify the expense of having ADSL at home. Now if some of Telkom's own employees feels this way, how about the general public?

My dad also recently told me that he wants to cancel his line. He would rather use a mobile connection, which will give him a lower monthly cost.

I thought telkom employees got free internet....

You obviously have no clue. All the ISPs have spoken out against the high ADSL line rentals and mandatory voice line rental. It's just that Rudi has been shouting the loudest, and his (former) company MWEB has been behind him in marketing this message throughout the media. Free The Web, if you recall. I also don't think any of these guys are afraid to offend Telkom as you put it. We all know that Telkom is the problem, the big elephant in the room.

Yep. ADSL in our country is about as streamlined as a cheetah strapped to an elephant :D

MWeb's Free the web campaign introduced uncapped this has nothing to do with reducing the cost of ADSL line rental which is what the article is about.

I said tier 1 ISPs NOT ALL ISPs are not vocal regarding the need to reduce ADSL prices that are currently significantly more than wireless.

No it made it cheaper. I was on Axxess uncapped before at R900/month.

MWeb free the web campaign made the ISP cost much cheaper for everyone. However the article is about ADSL line rental. For any package up to 10Gb wireless is still much cheaper. I think part of the problem is people don't realize line rental and ISP cost are separate costs.
