JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Iran has received a first shipment of missiles from North Korea that are capable of reaching Europe, Israel's military intelligence chief was quoted on Thursday as saying.

Known in the West as BM-25s, the Russian-designed missiles have a range of around 1,500 miles, giving them a longer reach than the Iranian-made Shihab-4 missiles which are capable of hitting Israel.

The intelligence chief, Major-General Amos Yadlin, was quoted by Israel's Haaretz newspaper as saying in a lecture on Wednesday that some BM-25s had arrived in Iran.

The BM-25 was originally manufactured in the Soviet Union, where it was known as the SSN6, a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, Haaretz reported.

Mmmm. It looks like Iran is preparing for the western invasion....

yes, because if the whole world were looking at my country with suspicion, I'd be shipping in medium range payload carriers..

How totally convienient that the missiles come from North Korea. Mark my words the US WILL invade Iran before the year is out, all they (the US) are doing is making up more and more 'excuses' to grab more oil..

No doubt next we will see fuzzy pics of missile silos al a Cuba...

From the same article

Israel has been urging the international community to pressure Iran to halt its nuclear programme as well as its efforts to obtain long-range missiles.

Israel is widely believed to have more than 200 nuclear warheads. It declines to comment on its atomic program, saying only it will not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East.

How typical... No one suggests the Israelies can't have nukes cause the US lets them do what they want. Israel is the root cause IMHO of most of the mid east problems..

no actually the root cause is the arab hunger for a muslim exclusive middle east

Israel isnt threatening to wipe other countries off the map either.. its a country thats had constant attacks from neighbouring countries since its independance.. Notice how all the countries that the US has a problem with having nukes are agressive countries, with lunatic leaders..

pls try think logically for 20 seconds and ask urself who is a bigger risk for having nukes, Israel or Iran? Israel has them for defense, Iran, just like north korea wants them for offense
BIG DIFFERENCE

errr, no. The biggest reason why so many countries are pissed at the US is because of their foreign policy - which is massively unfavourable in terms of trade, government partnerships, aid, and exchange agreements. The US does not play fair with small countries (look at the steal industry, agriculture, GM foods, mass dumping). Then you haven't even touched on corporate America and its antics, e.g. Microsoft, IBM, Lockheed, Boeing, and of course the biggest **** of them all - Halicon. Why do these Muslim folks hate Isreal so much? Not because of their religion. Well, not entirely because of their religion. It is more because Isreal is America's little lap dog and America have been using Isreal for years to further their oil seeking endeavours in the middle east. Don't be so naive to think this is another one of those America is protecting the world invasions on the way. America needs Iran's oil, and they want it before Russia or China get their hands on it. America must control the world oil markets to keep its own industries sustainable.

The Rise and Fall of the Judean State

Watching DSTV recently I saw a program which was focused on the era 100AD and at this stage The Romans persecuted the Jews for rebelling against them.
Only in the last century did the jews return to Israel.
Almost 2000 years later?

The Rise and Fall of the Judean State
For the small piece of land they are fighting over, we should consider ourselves lucky to live in South Africa far from the troubles of The East.

the US propoganda machine's been running since Bush Jnr got into power. Sadly, the US administration has clearly learned from their Iraqi mistakes. Last time round, it was the US intelligence that uncovered this so-called evidence of WMD. Now Isreal which is central in the region finds the intelligence evidence instead. Smart move. Wolfowitz must be pulling a lot of strings this time round.

OIL - that is what it is all about. Funny how America only seem to have problems with oil rich nations ie. IRAQ, IRAN and also Chavez in Venezuela (sp??) Luckily, peak oil is kicking in and will we all have to go learn to survive without the black gold. Prepare yourselves, however, for a lot of fighting and dying, for control of the last few barrels. The oil price will soon be well over $100 a barrel.

Also read a blog about peak oil. It's a very very scary thought. Since everything we do needs oil, alot more than one could think of is going to go wrong. Just think about transport of goods. It means no more food for all of us, so get to a farm as soon as you can ;) I get shivers just thinking about what I've read.

Consider this, food comes from farms. Farms need to transport the food to you. That's not the only thing they need fuel for. Crop spraying, ploughing and picking all use fuel. If one day it just stops there will be no cost effective way to cultivate crops. Quite a lot to think about, sadly.

It's all about oil. The bad thing for America though is that Peak oil will probably hit them hardest, making it most worthwhile for them to control the oil.

The Isreali's are rumour mongering again ... they obviously want more money from the Americans again :).

December 20, 2005: Some strange news from Germany last week. A mainstream paper reported that, “intelligence sources” revealed that Iran had received, from North Korea, 18 BM-25 missiles. But wait, isn’t the BM (Battle Machine)-25 an obsolete Soviet Cold War MLRS (multiple launch rocket system)? The Germans reported that the BM-25 was also known as the SS-N-6, another obsolete Soviet system, this time a submarine launched ballistic missile. Now that’s really interesting. Why are the North Koreans spending so much time and effort developing their own ballistic missiles, when they already have a proven design from the Russians.

Over the last three decades, t The North Koreans have basically scaled up Russian SCUD missiles to produce the 1,300 kilometer range Nodong missile. They are thought to have about a hundred of them, and have tested them. Less ready are ten or so Taepo Dong 1 missiles, with a range of about 3,000 kilometers. They are also working on an ICBM, the Taepo Dong 2, with a range of 6,000 kilometers, but this one is believed stuck in development, and has not been tested. North Korea sold Nodong technology to Pakistan and Iran, which then built their own versions (the Hatf V and Shihab 3, respectively).

The real BM-25 is a 250mm rocket, with a range of 20-30 kilometers, and mounted six to a truck. It was developed in the 1950s, and is still in service with a few countries that cannot afford anything of more recent vintage. The SS-N-6 is a 1960s vintage ballistic missile, and is known in Russia as the R-27, while the BM-25 is what the Russians call the BM-25. “SS-N-6” is a NATO code name for the R-27. This was Russia’s first true submarine launched ballistic missile, and sixteen of them were carried in Yankee class SSBNs (missile carrying nuclear submarines.) The R-27 had a range of 2,800 kilometers, while the Germans reported the range as 2,500 kilometers. Close enough. But what are these missiles doing in North Korea?

After the R-27 was replaced by more modern missiles in the 1970s, the missile continued to be used for scientific research until 1990. By that time, 492 R-27s had been launched, 87 percent of them successfully. It would be very embarrassing for the Russians if someone had illegally exported SS-N-6/R-27 missiles to North Korea. It is more likely, and has been reported a few years ago, that the Russian organization that designed the R-27, had illegally sold the plans for the R-27 to North Korea. This was supposed to have happened sometime in the 1990s, and the main reason for the deal was to obtain the missile guidance technology. The Russians kept improving the guidance system of the R-27 through the 1980s, while the North Koreans were desperate for missile guidance technology.

The German story had the 18 “BM-25s” arriving in kits, with much assembly required. If the North Koreans had built R-27s, from the plans they obtained, they never tested them. It was believed that the North Koreans were not interested in building R-27s, just getting their hands on some of the technology. The real story here appears to be several stories, and technologies being jumbled together, then served hot, if a bit incomprehensible.

So they bought some old untested junk ... no worries.

Well in my opinion you know nothing about the middle east then

Fine, it's your opinon.. I don't care for Jews or Arabs, but I do believe if that the US didn't mollycoddle Isreal like it does then a lot of these issues wouldn't happen.

Personally I couldn't care less if any mid eastern state got wiped off the face of the planet. The US will do exactly what it likes, when it likes. All it's doing at the moment is building up international support for it's oil grabbing, empire building actions. Having it's lapdog, Isreal (who would NEVER dream of hurting anyone now would they?) come out with these acusations is just perfect for their plans while they develop a strong military presence in the mid east..

Look at The Project for a New American Century for all the info you need.

Like the US you mean? Weird how the biggest, most agressive, most money-hungry country is really, really keen to right the wrongs in iraq and iran (oil bearing countries) and completely ignore any other country that has problems (but no oil).

Strange... Perhaps they're just doing it "for the people". :D

Problem as I see it is that one day, the US is going to push too many buttons and they're going to piss off the wrong country. And that country is going to go "**** you and to hell with you." and start a nuclear war.

And that will suck serious arse.

Too true - who says the can't buy missiles ? Its a free world last time i checked .....besdies its just a change of supplier - up until a while ago - they came from the states.

You can do whatever you want; but then you must bear the consiquencise also.

Weren't Iran about to start selling there oil for euros instead of dollars. Seems unlikely to me that they would start attacking the people they are looking to do business. Just because they are capable of attacking someone doesnt mean they are inclined to.

Yip Nick - considering the only two other oil bourses are selling in dollars and owned by US companies.
