There’s a Sanral googly at Gillooly’s

The freeway from OR Tambo International Airport into Johannesburg is not part of the e-toll network, but you will pay to use it anyway - at 10 times the rate for the rest of the Gauteng freeways.

The R24 runs from the airport in Kempton Park to the Gillooly’s interchange, where it links up with the N12 and the N3, and, for about one kilometre, joins the tolled road.

Anyone using the R24 from the airport to Johannesburg must travel under the Loerie toll gantry just before Gillooly’s. There is no gantry for those using the R24 in the other direction.

The R24 is not part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, so it’s not being maintained or improved from the SA National Roads Agency toll roads budget, but the Loerie gantry stretches right across the combined N12/R24.

The overhead road signs clearly show the N12 and upcoming N3 as toll roads, but excludes the R24.

Reader Gavin Preller, complained to Sanral about those using the R24 from Edenvale and Kempton Park through to Johannesburg.

“Will the two right-hand lanes of the Loerie gantry at the Gillooly’s interchange be switched off; that is, no toll being charged, as this is the R24 to Johannesburg?” he asked.

“Will there be a different rate charged for the R24 lanes through to Johannesburg?”

Sanral did not respond to requests for comment which were submitted to the agency on Wednesday
