On March 4, 2012, Vladimir Putin was elected to serve as Russia's president for another six years, and he is set to take up office following his inauguration on May 7.

To his supporters, such as those we encountered celebrating at an election night government rally in Moscow, Putin is a hero, the strong man who brought order to Russia after the chaos of the Yeltsin years. They love his carefully cultivated image: the horse-riding, judo black-belted, stand-for-no-nonsense action man who has taken the country back to its rightful place on the world's stage.

But elsewhere in Moscow that night, under the watchful eye of state security and police, Putin's political opponents gathered to express their disapproval. Disappointed by the result after enjoying a surprising late surge in the anti-Putin camp in the weeks before the poll, many of them said that his years at the top of Russian politics had seen the country's reputation become synonymous with cronyism and corruption, and that with Putin at the helm inner cliques have been allowed to run Russia for their own benefit and personal gain.

Their language was far from diplomatic. "Putin, thief!" they chanted and promised to return to the streets in the weeks and months ahead.

Such abuse may not bother Russia's president-elect very much - after all he has just been returned to power - but it does reflect wider rumours about Vladimir Putin's personal finances, business dealings and his relationship with some of the richest and most powerful businessmen in the land; the oligarchs who run its major companies and have accumulated fabulous wealth as a result.

Stories about the extent to which Putin may have personally benefited from these friendships and his years in office have been the currency of international and diplomatic gossip for years, fuelled by claims made by exiled political opponents about vast multi-billion dollar fortunes in offshore bank accounts. They even surfaced on WikiLeaks on 2010 when a quarter of a million secret memos from American diplomats were published on the internet. In one of them, Condoleezza Rice, the former US secretary of state, quotes a Russian opposition figure as saying that "Vladimir Putin is nervously trying to secure his future immunity from potential law enforcement investigations into his alleged illicit proceeds".

So is there any substance to these stories? Is Putin the modest 'man of the people' as his supporters declare - a leader who eschews wealth and privilege, as honest as the day is long? Or is he the owner of a vast but secret fortune and at the centre of a web of intrigue and financial wheeler-dealing as his critics allege?

For this edition of People & Power, reporter Sarah Spiller and a team from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism set off to find out. In a journey that takes them from central Moscow to a judo club in St Petersburg, from country 'dachas' to a mysterious palace on the shores of the Black Sea, they assemble an intriguing story of an enigmatic leader who enjoys a lavish lifestyle somewhat at odds with his official public persona.

He has made his money via business ventures, possibly stealing money from the people but america has wasted 3-8 trillion on war, is that really any different to stealing americans money? So what if he has billions and is super rich. No president is perfect and sadly we are ruled by very bad people. Be it america, russia whatever the people in charge are not good. It's more a matter of who is the worst. We are not looking for good and bad we are only looking for the president that is not the worst :D. In the coming months we will see the bad guys going at it and we just better hope that it ends well and we don't see any mushrooms.

Aljazeera has become very pro west so of course this story will make the headlines but honestly after they faked syria footage i have zero respect for aljazeera, the way you look at RT is the way i look at aljazeera. I like most of the networks but after the syria debacle i cannot bring myself to even go on their website or watch their channel on dstv. I have no issies with bbc, cnn and so on even if they are biased i still check them everyday but i don't even bother with those fakers on aljazeera.

I would have been more interested if it was on bbc or cnn but aljazeera is the worst news network on the planet and the less people use them the better. There is so much trash talk across the board that it makes for very interesting viewing but faking stories and video's is not nice.

Just the other day I posted a link from them on the same show (People and Power), that dealt with the America Koch brothers and their evil influence. You really dont have a clue about what you are talking about man. If you think Al Jazeera is "pro-west" you are either an effing idiot or you dont watch them consistently. They have several shows/articles/news stories a day verbally slagging America, Israel and the UK.

Reality check: The rich screw over the little guys. What must we do? Why u only picking on the russian president, what about bush or obama who were/are stealing from americans to wage rubbish wars? At least for the most part putin is making his money using his influence granted but i would rather have a president making money than a president who is spending all the people's money on rubbish wars. It must sicken americans to see how much money has been spent in iraq and afghanistan.

My eyes are wide open but there is nothing i can do, you seemed fine with the west invading iraq on lies. nobody took issue with the war crimes committed there so why now is the russian president's financial situation such a major issue? seriously if the US and co can get away with lying to the world to get a war then i see no reason why putin cannot make billions in his personal capacity.

I really could care less about putin and all his money. All i hope is that when the west attacks iran for no reason other than iran being anti west that putin calls his troops into the war and stands up against the west.

With so many countries like russia in the world i have to wonder why your heart bleeds for them so much, do you have russian family? You question my intelligence which is laughable because i am just a forum user, why would i care about the people when the world is run by people who don't. Why did you give no reply regarding your thoughts on the 2nd most powerful army on the planet? You think they are joke the rest of the world considers them second only to the US who have access to trillions and trillions of dollars. I would say on their limited budget it is remarkable how powerful they are. Are your thoughts from the dream world you are living in again?

It's sad listening to a man who has no grasp on reality and cries in his corner for russians. How about you shed some tears for most of africa or perhaps the people in saudi arabia and bahrain. Perhaps shed some tears for the gays in saudi arabia or the shiias in bahrain.

Life is not fair and never has been but i don't see why the russians deserve any more tears than most of the planet but you seem to think russians deserve more tears than everyone else and i would love for you to explain why the russians are so much more important than everyone else.

Why does the world sit by and allow africa to destroy itself? Why are the men in africa allowed to rule like they do? have a good look at africa before you start crying over russians because africans are far worse off than russians. Starvation, disease, rape, murder, genocide. When putin starts allowing all that maybe i will give shyte and perhaps when we become civilized and stop acting like C**** maybe i will give a shyte about russians but i live in africa, i don't live in europe nor do i live in russia.
