Article: 80 percent of surveyed kids use alcohol

Nearly 80 percent of a group of surveyed Gauteng high school pupils regularly consume alcohol, according to findings released by the Bureau for Market Research (BMR) on Sunday.

Of the 4346 pupils in grades eight to 12 who were quizzed, 66.6 percent said they had been drunk, 44.8 percent had done "binge drinking" and 79.4 percent regularly consumed alcohol, according to the survey by the bureau, which is part of Unisa.

My to eldest are 15 and 16. I kak myself every time they go out. They also have loads of "chill session" get togethers.
We try encourage these at our house now just so we can keep an eye on them and know they are safe.

You let a 15 year old go out at night?!

Ye. Movies and stuff. If it is a party there is always adult supervision. Home time is 22h30.
This is pretty standard for all the kids. They are little mall rats. Either Bedford Centre or Greenstone.

We also only let them go out every second Friday. Not every weekend.

Yeah, most people that age drink. Not surprising. I knew people that drank before they hit puberty.

We were raised with a healthy respect for alchohol but also as a norm ( mediteranian wine with meals, agua dente with coffee etc ). I drank alchohol early but not a fool who always got drunk for the sake of getting drunk. It really depends on how you raise your child but I lean more to education and controlled trial versus subterfuge by the minor.

How can you blame the parents?think I started drinking when I was 16 though we only did it at a mates house

Kids of today are ill disciplined with no morals,values and too much freedom.

A lekker klap will put them in order !

@crysis

You were once 15. What were you doing at that age? reading books next to the fire place while dad sat on a couch and mom baked cookies?

Books yes. We were only allowed to go out nights from matric, age 17.

We gave them that freedom, along with it comes drug, alcohol, and lack of discipline. We cannot complain when we have afforded them that much... Its only natural

Its proven alcohol helps with thinking, and I can confirm a double vodka really gets the Essey skills flowing (2nd Varsity)
