KAAPSTAD. – ’n Man van Bellville is glo Saterdag in die Durbanville-polisieselle doodgeskop nadat hy weens openbare dronkenskap opgesluit is.

Mnr. Eben Meyer (47) van Bellville is glo omstreeks 01:30 deur twee mans in die selle aangerand. Hy is na bewering herhaaldelik geskop en geslaan en het ernstige kopbeserings opgedoen.
Meyer het volgens sy familie by die Stones-kroeg in Durbanville gekuier nadat hy glo ’n rusie met sy verloofde, me. Sylvia Hamman, gehad het.

Die polisie het Meyer Saterdag om 01:00 in Renbaanweg, Durbanville, opgelaai en na die polisiekantoor geneem weens openbare dronkenskap. Hy is volgens die polisie saam met agt ander mense wat ook onder die invloed was, in ’n sel aangehou.

Lt.kol. Andre Traut, ’n provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder, het die voorval bevestig en gesê die twee mans verskyn môre in die Bellville-landdroshof op aanklagte van moord.
“Hy is in die selle aangerand en het weens sy beserings beswyk. Hy is Saterdagoggend vir openbare dronkenskap in hegtenis geneem. Dit blyk hy en die twee mans was in ’n rusie betrokke, wat tot die bakleiery aanleiding gegee het,” het Traut gesê.

Die Onafhanklike Polisie-ondersoekende Direktoraat (Opod) ondersoek ook die voorval. Mnr. Moses Dlamini, Opod-woordvoerder, kon egter nie vir kommentaar bereik word nie.

Meyer se pa, mnr. Brian Meyer van Saldanha, het gister vertel hy het om 02:05 ’n oproep van die polisie ontvang om te sê sy seun is in die polisieselle dood.

“Ek was geskok toe ek dit gehoor het. Ek kon nie verder praat nie.

“Hy het voorheen ’n drankprobleem gehad, maar hy was die afgelope paar maande nugter,” het sy pa gesê.
Die familie sal vandag sy lyk in die staatslykshuis by die Tygerberg-hospitaal gaan uitken. Daar is nog geen begrafnisreëlings nie.

Sy oudste dogter, Naomi (24), het gister met trane in haar oë vertel hulle is in die duister oor die gebeure.
“Die polisie moes seker gehoor het toe hulle my pa aangerand het. Hoe kan dit wees dat niemand gehoor het nie? Niemand het hom gehelp nie.”

Die familie het reeds berading gekry.

Meyer laat buiten sy verloofde en oudste dogter ook twee ander dogters, Sonika (22) en Inge (17), agter. Hy het ook ’n kleinseun, Marko (2).

Apologies that the story is in Afrikaans but the gist of it is this:
  • Guy was picked up for being drunk in public
  • Was held in a police cell with eight other people who were also under the influence
  • Got into an argument with two of the guys
  • Argument led to a fight which led to the two guys physically attacking him
  • Man died as a result of the unjuries sustained during the attack


My sister-in-law's cousin just forwarded this story to me because the deceased was her colleague.

This was always the part that worried me about being locked up in in a police cell; the lack of safety aspect and the inherent risk/danger of being locked up with repeat offenders. Plus, in this case, throw alcohol in the mix and intoxicated persons with attitude and you end up with a situation that turned out the way this one did.

Condolences to his family for their loss.

It's well known that police don't give a shyte about what happens in the cells. I've been told that all sorts of horrors happen and the police don't interfere with it.

So I assume the two guys that did this is up for murder now?
 
Another payout by the Minister of police coming up. Lets hope the family start a civil claim against the minister.

I don't know how many times I made my points in here and the rest of idiots would come to attack me said, "other countries are the same." "we are not that bad." "so many skilled and good policemen in SA but only few of them are bad and incompetence." etc etc....

people are going to be emotionless for any bad thing happened in SA. bad or good? ask anc. I don't know and I can't do anything to change it.
 
Are the police supposed to separate each and every suspect into their own cells? How big do you think police stations are? I think these types of incidents are unavoidable unless you just keep all the drunkards on the street.

Firstly, I didn't attack you or your point-of-view.

Secondly, just because you hold a view that this kind of thing happens all the time, doesn't mean that yours is the right view. Remember, the simplest way for evil to triumph is for good men to stand by and do nothing.

I'll refrain from making sweeping statements about police incompetence; would rather tackle each incident on its merits and believe me, I've experienced the best and the worst of police service. As an example, a very good friend of mine was also held for driving under the influence. Fortunately for him, he was so obviously gay that the officers decided to put him alone in a separate cell, for his own protection. On the other hand, another friend of mine's son was held for the same offence. His dad decided that, instead of bailing him out, he would teach him a lesson by letting him spend a night in holding. Unfortunately, the boy was raped in that very evening. His father bailed him out the next day but the damage was done already. The boy committed suicide shortly thereafter, not being able to deal with the rape; was also **** scared of identifying his attackers and making a case against them.

You said that you can't do anything to change things but right now, there is a community rallying against the police station where this happened because, apparently this is not the first incident of its kind at this particular police station.
 
For five other people to stand by and do nothing it this guy was probably looking for it. Its a little difficult to believe the others would just stand by and watch him getting his ass handed to him.

It's also possible to knock someone out with a single slap/punch. If the guy was unconscious from the get-go there wouldn't be much screaming.
 
I'd hate to have diabetic attack, get thrown into a cell by some dumb ass cops and then get murdered by cell "mates".

Surely there is some accountability as he was in police "custody"

This is typical of SA where there is no respect for life and limb - not only in SA though and it's just sick!

first, I didn't say you attack me.

second, I don't think you can change. (protest or peititon or whatsoever. -> ex. e-toll) if you want to change it you must change the government. (pull down anc). otherwise, sorry.

I feel powerless and I already became emotionless.

want to change? overthrow cANCer. (no matter how to do that. ;) )
