TV / Monitor advice

I want to get myself a new monitor or TV to use with my Xbox and PC.

I had a Acer 24" monitor that I was quite happy with but it got stolen.

I see that Game has a special on a Telefunken FHD 26" LED for R1899.00. It has 3 x HDMI connections and a VGA connection that is perfect for me.

I am just not sure how good it will be to serve as a gaming monitor but at that price it is a bargain.

Will I be better served buying a 24" Monitor?

Check reviews on it.. if there are no funnies then get it, sounds like a sweet deal...

If you don't get out now this thread will go from you getting called a noob for not calling it an led backlit lcd, then an argument will break out about plasma vs lcd vs ips, then someone will recommend whatever they have at home, and the conclusion will be that you should buy a 40" plasma for R5000 rather.

Short Answer: Yes. "Telefunken" they're selling now has nothing to do with the goold old German brand, it's some Chinese company just using the name. All the ones I've seen have terrible picture quality, and if it's a TV it's unlikely to display text etc. properly since as far as I know the el cheapo's don't have a PC mode like the Samsungs, LG's or Sonys. Besides, the difference between 24 and 26" isn't that much, so it's probably better to go for a smaller display with better quality.

LG makes some cheap e-IPS monitors for just over R2000 I think.

Prices for that are around R4500, which IMO is insane for a TN-panel based display. If you have that kind of money, rather go for the Dell Ultrasharp U2410. Again, smaller, but much better picture quality. Although, if you want size, look at a Samsung LA32D550 TV instead. We have a whole thread about people using that as a PC monitor. It's 32", about R3200, and has an S-PVA panel. And unlike the cheap TV's it has a PC mode. So it will give you better colour and viewing angles, and bigger size than the 27" Samsung for R4.5k. Only drawback is the resolution is the same, so pixels will be more easily visible on the TV.

Whatever you do, stay away from TN panels. The less people buy them, the better the chance that manufacturers will drop this awful technology once and for all. If you don't know what I'm on about, Google LCD panel types, or IPS panel.

Hmm, my space is a bit confined. My cabinet is 50 cm high and the TV is 56 with stand. It will make it without the stand.
