This one downloaded onto my PC today, anyone seen it in action?

The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.

More information for this update can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=39157

Goto System32, and rename WGAlogon.dll & WGATray.exe then kill the WGAtray.exe process and Fanny's your aunt.

Ja, MS now deciding what's legal on your machine and whats not - and if your ms software is illegal - then, already - in some states of america expect a visit from the thought police.

i think that for those who has a illegal copy of XP and wants to purchase a license, its a complete waste of money to do so. Rather wait and get Vista with all its Faults, in due course it would run as smooth as XP (if your pc is Decent enough ofcourse)

Windows XP EULA in Plain English (End User Licence Agreement)

You agree that at any time, and at the request of “content providers” (eg. media giants such as Sony and BMG), Microsoft may disable certain features on your computer, such as the ability to play your music or movie files.

You agree that Microsoft can automatically and without your consent put new software on your computer.

Microsoft (and anyone else chosen by Microsoft) may collect information about your computer and may share it with other companies, but this should not include personal information about you.

Microsoft may check that you are a licensed user before allowing you to upgrade software. After upgrading software, you may no longer use the older version of the software (even if the new version is broken or otherwise undesirable).

The catch is that if you do NOT agree to install it, that's the end of online or automatic updates for you. So you have no choice. Best thing is to get a nice corporate edition and valid key I reckon. Bastards!

MS Expands Anti-Piracy Program, Reissues Patch
Microsoft today began expanding its anti-piracy program by quietly pushing out a software update that in many cases automatically scans Windows computers and reports on whether they are powered by unlicensed software.
here

Open Office, Mandriva

I was also one of those MS Noobs that used everything MS threw at me.
Recently I was presently surprised after installing Open Office on my system how functional it is.
I am going to be making a determined effort this year to try and rid myself of MS Products out of my life.
My neighbour runs two machines at home with some sort of a switch between the two for his monitor etc. On the one machine is Mandriva for all his office work and emailing and on the other is a copy of XP which is solely used for playing games.
Basically he uses MS WindowsXP only for games.

Microsoft Office users ready to jump ship: poll

I haven't been using Windows Update for months already.

AutoPatcher is all you need ;)

I have used that Autopatcher. Cannot say I noticed anything different other than some services had to be restarted etc. Actually thinking about it a few minor issues have started since I installed it.
To be quite honest I don't like to put too many patches in XP.
I have never liked Service Pack 2 either.
I rather use Service Pack 1 with a few vulnerability patches and run behind a good paranoid Firewall like Kerio Personal Firewall in advanced mode.

But like I said in another thread this morning, I am going to make a determined effort to start using other products besides MS.
I recently started using Open Office and WOW, why didn't I start using it a long time ago?

Don't pirate MS-Office: use ours, says OpenOffice.org

Edit. Microsoft Office uninstalls well.

I would love to use Linux if Dual monitor worked properly with no LAG... and if ALL non-ms applications and games worked fine on it.

I would love to be able to switch over the Linux and I have tried many times already. But, the truth is I end up spending so much time trying to get drivers (especially for my GFX) working that I end up giving up each time :(

e.g. I just downloaded the latest Beta of Ubuntu and it would not pick up my GFX so I was stuck with a command prompt and another 600+ MB of waisted bandwidth

No need to waste bandwidth getting hold Ubuntu, they'll send you pressed CD's for free :D
Seriously - Altough I don't use Ubuntu I did get them to send me some CD's to try it out ;)
Check out http://shipit.ubuntu.com

You could also always try a "Freedom Toaster" - if you have one near enough

Welcome to ShipIt

ShipIt lets you request Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) CDs that will be posted to you free of charge.

Unfortunately, we are currently not taking any requests for our next release. So, if you would like to request Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) CDs, please check back with us again around mid-May 2006.
