Ok I saw the thread with solder my antenna to my UTD, shame :confused: , but anyway....I got a UTD from my reseller now,gonna use the UTU for more mobile stuff......and I also wanna put the UTD in the roof! But I don't wanna get an electrician to run power,get an antenna or run a long power extension into the roof...........so anybody done Power over Eth?How long can you run it for?Safe? diagrams or anything...please help or i'm gonna start chopping little wires :D
 
Power over ethernet? Never knew it was possible. Is it?

Use an extension cable if you have to, or get an electrician to put a plug socket in the roof. You could also run electrical strip cable alongside your ethernet cable.
 
Power over ethernet is possible. Dont know how though, why dont you just get a external aerial? It will help your speed in Bergvliet alot, trust me. Then you can run the cable using that and it wont have to go into your roof.

Its only R350 these days and you could have got R100 off buying a UTD and a aerial toether, maby you can still ask for the deal, then its only R250 for a better connection.
 
:D :D :D :D A buddy and I experimented and err vouala! PoE......my reseller said he would do it for me no charge too, but I wanted to play abit......so now I have UTD in roof *via 20m cable and PoE, well DIY PoE* and UTU in Laptop bag! Websites definately opening quicker than the UTU in roof!
 
:confused: :confused: :confused: Why is Ethernet called 'Ethernet' and not something else? Anybody know? I'm dying to find out........tonight I have time on my hands.....I'm staying sober and the chick is studying so.....anybody know?

I'm not worried with 'speed' speed, just don't want that blue and lima green TelSkom stink near my place!
So I'm happy even if iBurst go south for a few minutes/hours, as long as I don't pay phone bills! :D
 
Well then dont worry about it. The new towers should up your speeds anyway whenever it is that they go up.

And that R100 discount only counts when you are initially buying your modem, ot if you upgrade or buy it later. Read that on the Iburst site...
They just want to make it cheaper for people to get onto thier network so that they can rope in more subscribers, nothing to help those who are on the network already.

Um. wow.. ethernet: Ethernet got its name from the ether, single coaxial cable used in the original Ethernet version.

You know all this talk of speed........made me.......anyway I went and got the antenna for R250 :D *had to collect it though being Sunday and all* and once again I'm gonna install it myself *Don't worry I won't solder it! hahaHe gave me a 'pigtail' *......maybe my buddies will come over and we'll make a braai of it! :D

Guys can I use the same mast that the other antennae are on?Would it interfere? How do I know I've pointed it the right way or perfectly? :confused:

Well Justin, the right way is towards Plumsbstead, the tower is pretty much on the main road, so If you aim to toward the main road at Plumsteads side you should be fine.

Generally you check by using UTTracestar and seeing what gives you the highest signal strength. Just move it around until your pings are lowest and you get the best signal in dB. Install Tracestar and it should be obvious.

Im not shure what you mean by teh "mast" but one you use the antenna, it is the aerail that recieves signal, you no loger really use the UTD's aerial so that wont interfere.

and that wikipedia entry doesnt describe the name i dont think.

OK gr8, gonna give it a bash....

The mast is the pole that my DSTV and other Antennae are on.
 
I use PoE on a bunch of devices, from wireless sets to phones. Though whats more interesting that PoE, is data over power. PoE devices can be rather finiky about how much power you throw at them, so be careful not to pop it, and make sure the device is able to handle PoE.

I just used the Brown and White/Blue strands from the Ethernet cable and bam power over 20M cable! :confused: Hope it lasts :D
 
haha good luck dude.

I'm not seker if a DSTV mast would be a problem ,but you'll get great reception off it I'm shure.

As far as I know, only the UTD has a problem with veing close to other electronics, only certain things anyway though.

why don't you buy the ethernet power splitter from a PC shop, the are so cheap, all you need is two of them, and then you have PoE
 
There seems to be some confusion here over PoE and what it is used for. PoE was designed so that you don't require separate power to use a device that is used on an ethernetwork. A low-power dc source is added over two data wires to carry power to devices that's connected to the network so that you can use devices like a printer or an ip phone without connecting it to a separate power source like an electrical outlet.

You have to use a splitter to seperate the signal devices from the power source or else it's bye-bye network. And before anyone asks you can't use the splitters to connect your network to your mains power. Yes, it's possible but requires other equipment.

:D it worked!

UTD in roof DIY PoE to PC and Power back on the ground! and a antenna plonked next the Dish outside.........I open my explorer and started a 10Meg file the meter when ape shyte! jumped 1.32 and as much as 2.12mb :D God I am chuffed.......Hmf!

Fell off the ladder from the ceiling though! :( but it was worth it! :D
