The IS uncapped, unshaped, cisco router ISP bundle does torrents quite nicely, I normally pull at 25k/s just to give the other business users a little bit of bandwidth. After hours however, depending on the number of peers 60k/s prehaps higher. That is up and down streams combined obviously.

You get 4 (?) usable static IPs. AFAIK IS or some resellers will sell you one. It costs R1539 incl VAT excl Telkom line pm, with about a R2000 setup. You only get to rent the router ie: it is not yours at the end of your contract. Runs over their satellite connection so there is some latency, but speeds are pretty good otherwise IMHO.

is it mean that I can still using the 384k line to run their 512k uncapped? I just phone IS, they say it support international torrent and p2p. Is it truth? The once off fee is R1500 and 12 month contract with the cisco router. Will this router be mine after contract finish? Can I link my Linksys w354G adsl modem as a wireless router?jabulani said:

Ive been looking at uncapped accounts from IS. But they all look crappy.
Firstly, you have to sign a 12 month contract with the ISP. And with things changing so often in SA, who wants to be locked into a contract for 12 months.
Then they also charge u a R2k "setup" fee. IE. they plug the router in at your house, which they have preconfigured by just loading a file. Wow, def worth the R2000 if u ask me.
Why do u have to use a cisco router anyway? I take it the account gets shaped then? No P2P or torrents, and even if they are allowed, im sure they are shaped in such a way that you always get crap speeds.
Really doubt an uncapped account is worth it. Unless its for a business.

Does IS still route International over Satellite? If they have their uncapped on Fiber, I'd be happy to fork 2700pm for 1MB Uncapped... Not via Sat though.
Sat is old technology and not something I'd want to rely on. If they want to ask a premium price, they'd rather provide a premium service - via fiber...

Does the router enable them to set a limit to the amount of pc's that can be connected to the internet?
My setup at mo.
Router ------Mikrotik-----switch----wifi ap(for laptop)-----user1,user2,user3,userx.
With the cisco. would it be?

The reason i have a mikrotik is that me an a couple of peeps in my apartment building share our internet costs an this is a great way to manage and secure our network so that no one abuses or gains entry without us knowing it on the spot.
So....to anybody that actually has the IS acc. Do IS restrict the amount of people that can use the internet line?

So if they allow P2P, then what is the "locked" Cisco Router used for? It must be for some sort of prioritizing or shaping?

The router is rented as said before - you have to sign a bit of paper saying you'll return it in good condition.
You HAVE to use their Cisco router - use your Linksys as a coffee tray or something.

I don't know because I don't know this Mikrotik. You plug the Cisco into the Telkom jack. It has 4 Ethernet ports with static IPs you can use. In my (conventional) setup I run one port into a gateway and then to a home lan/wireless lan via a switch. Logically, they don't restrict you in any way other than the line speed. I could shove devices into the other ethernet ports and run a few more little networks or servers if I wanted. Don't know if this helps you.
