An al Qaeda leader wanted in connection with the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole has been killed in an air raid in Yemen, a tribal chief has said.

The United States has confirmed that Fahd al Quso died in the attack on Sunday, verifying earlier reports by local officials.

Following his death al Qaeda militants attacked an army base in the southern Abyan province, killing 20 soldiers and capturing 25, according to the Yemeni military.

"Fahd al Quso, who was wanted by the United States for the attack against the USS Cole, was killed tonight (Sunday) in an American raid on the Rafadh region," tribal chief Abdel Magid bin Farid al Awlaki said.

Al Qaeda, which has strongholds in southern and eastern Yemen, confirmed Quso's death in a text message sent to the media.

The October 2000 attack on US Navy destroyer USS Cole, in Yemen's port of Aden, killed 17 sailors and wounded 40 more.

Quso's name featured on an FBI list of most wanted terrorists, along with a reward of up to $5m for information leading to his arrest.

He died when two missiles exploded near his home in Rafadh, east of Ataq, the provincial capital of Shabwa province, the tribal chief said, adding that two bodyguards were also killed in the raid.

A US government official welcomed the death of the "senior terrorist operative," saying he had been actively planning attacks against America and Yemen.

"Fahd al Quso was a senior terrorist operative of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula who was deeply involved in ongoing terrorist plotting against Yemeni and US interests at the time of his death," said the official, who did not want to be named.

"He was also involved in numerous attacks over many years that murdered Americans as well as Yemeni men, women and children."

The Yemeni embassy in Washington also confirmed the death of "one of the most wanted terrorists in Yemen."

Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility for the attack on the USS Cole, which was carried out when militants on a skiff loaded with explosives blew a 30-ft hole in the warship.

Not really, i have only really noticed since obama took down osama. Good tactic for re-election.

The odd thing is they say he was planning attacks, i wonder what he has been doing for seven years, did he wake up two weeks ago and start planning or has he been planning for 7 years i wonder.

It's difficult to know the BS from truth because they ensure they kill these people or they lock them away so no one has access to them. Another thing is that they have to keep killing these people to justify their missiles.

I wonder why al queda confirm it. Then again al queda is an american agency. They are there to ensure the US have an enemy. You cannot wage war with no enemy.

The conspiracies want to have it that the US commanders knew the attacks was coming and ignored it deliberately, just as much hogwash as you are perpetuating here on a daily basis.

What do you mean ''Not all the Japs attacked them. . ."? Are you refering to the third wave that was held back?

Many reasons for that;
1 - Losses had doubled from the first to second wave due to improved anti-air defenses. 9 aircraft were lost in the first wave, 20 in the second and Admiral Nagumo believed losses would continue to double or even triple as the US forces found their feet.
2 - The fleet, which was already operating at the extreme end of it's logistical capacity, would rapidly run into fuel problems the longer they stayed in the North Pacific. He also feared for an attack on the way home, at which point a third wave would have severely depleted fuel and ammunition and thus limited combat efficiency. He also wanted planes ready to be launched in a defensive manner during the return journey.
3 - The turnaround time between the second and third waves would have driven the third wave into a nighttime launch, something only the British Royal Navy had ever attempted and something the IJN had not planned for.
4 - Admiral Nagumo, who was now aware that the USN Carrier Fleet was not in the harbour, was uncomfortable not knowing the location of the carrier fleet and feared for a strike the longer he stayed. This also ties in with fears & concerns of reason ''2''. Unable to track the carrier fleet, would they stumble across it unprepared on the return?
5 - Admiral Nagumo was not certain of the strength of American land-based airforces and was also worried that the fleet had slipped into the range of land-based bombers. At this time, attacks on land-based targets had not been comprehensive.
6 - Imperial Japanese Navy doctrine dictated the preservation of force and not outright destruction of the enemy, making the concerns in ''1'', ''2'', ''4'' & ''5'' clear.

At the time Isoroku Yamamoto, arhcitect of the attack, agreed with Admiral Nagumo's concernns, although in hindsight he lamented Nagumo not sending the third wave in to strike land-based facilites that would have made it more difficult for the US to repair & regroup it's forces.
