Two desktops failing at the same time, coincidence?

So lately having been noticing my two desktop Pcs behaving strangely i.e showing a few artifacts, freezing and restarting for a few weeks.

Today I see that both are unable to get into windows. One does not even power on, power light stays off when power button is pressed while the other pc turns on but does not post and no hard drive activity is indicated.

Have tried a few things but nothing seems to help.
I have done the following.

- disconnected all drives and tried to start up
- changed power cables
- tried plugging pcs in a different power outlet

Maybe some of you guys have some suggestions before I go out and buy two new power supplies.

If you'd like the specs of the pc's please ask.

I'd say it is a worm or virus causing the freezing and the restarting is the two on a network together?Or maybe it could be software which is on both pc's that is causing it.But it is difficult to say for sure? or it's just the result of of hardware busy failing.

All of the sudden both doesn't work? maybe it's a surge or lighting which took them out.Or hardware that was causing the random freeze just failed completely...

As for the one pc with no lights that sounds to me like psu, The other one it could be the motherboard? have you tried switching the two psu between the two computers. Maybe puting the pc which doesn't post psu in the one with no power see what happens.

Maybe take them to the pc shop let them test it with new psu and see what happens before spending cash...

Could it be an issue with the power regulation from the mains? The quality of our Eskom power is notoriously bad. Fluctuations on the grid can be devastating for poor quality PSU's.

Thanx for the lengthy responce. Good idea about swapping the psu's, will give that a try shortly.

Specs are as follows
Pc 1
Intel Q6600
GA-EX38-D55 LGA775
GEIL 2x2GB DDR2 800
Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 600W
Xfx 9600 GT

Pc 2
Intel E8600
Cheap Ecs mb
Jetram 2x1GB DDR2 800
AOpen 500 watt Psu
 
Are they connected to a LAN and to the phone line? I lost a machine and a half when lightning struck my place 2 years ago, very similar symptoms.

Yes the both connected to a LAN with phone line to the router. Not too sure if its lightening though as the Router seems to be working fine.
 
Bought an Antec25 500 watt psu today. After installing it, the pc still does not start up. Any other suggestions to what it could be?
 
Are there any LEDs on the mainboard indicating that it's getting power?
 
No activity at all, wonder if Esquire would take the psu back.

A blown PSU can easily take the motherboard with it. I've had that happen before :/

Well if one PSU isn't working you'll still need one. They should accept it back if you have all the packaging and it's within 7 days.

Thats true over spent abit though, got the Antec25 Earthwatts 500 green for about R700, rather use that cash for a new mainboard.

Saving cash on a cheaper psu is ok , but just make sure it is still has a good brandname behind it.
