Is there a wizard out there who has figured out how to make calls to landlines in SA that are actually free, using VOIP?

NOPE, and if someone did find out how to do this, i highly doubt that they would share it with the rest of the world

Not free, but almost free. The following SIP VoIP providers only charge 0.012 Euro = R0.10 per minute:

www.poivy.com
www.voipcheap.com
www.voipdiscount.com
www.voipbuster.com

Just for information - the cheapest VoIP Provider to terminate to mobile phones in SA is currently www.mutualphone.com. Their rate is US$0.16 = R1.05 per minute.

Makes you wonder !

Why does one company need to go by so many different names? Just to foster the illusion of competition?

another question: is there a way of using Helkoms closer calling plans for free dialup internet? Im sure helkom's got most of the ISP's pop numbers mapped on their system but im highly sure there is a way to dial up and sit 24/7 without paying for it unless using an 0800 isp number.....back in the day before isps found out, many peeps used that but unfortunately they found out and dropped all those lines....:(

Yep, the old "holy grail" of VOIP - free calls to land lines is never going to happen, but there's a good side.

I phone my brother in SA every now and then using skype out - we can have a 30 minute chat for about R20 - not bad.

Heh, I made the mistake of calling him when I was doing some travelling and used my mobile - 14 minutes = R250 - EEK. :D

haha, u got it cheap.
when we first came to england we didnt have a phone, so phoned family from the tickie box. which you can conveniently stick your debit card into so you dont have to put money into it the whole time.
£1.10 a minute to S.A landline.
and i think it has a telkom-stench to it, as it isnt a distance thing...phoning s.a. form any country on the world always seems to be more expensive than phoning usa or even australia....i can phone u.s.a. for 1p a minute from my landline now, yet s.a. is still on the 40-50p mark. Unfortunately, I think the yanks are tossers, so got nobody there to phone. same with skype...s.a. is still more expensive than other destinations, even destinations with less "traffic" or a lower population.

and if it isnt telkoms fault, dont tell me...i enjoy blaming it on them in anycase.

Voipbusters.com charge seven and a half cents per minute on SA landline calls but i'm still waiting for them to deduct the money for all the calls i've made:)
