North Carolina voting on Amendment 1 - No gay marriages

Your thoughts? I think the union of marriage should be a right of any two consenting adults, irrespective of gender, race and of course religion (somewhere I imagine the major opposition has come from)

I'm glad Obama is for it as well, says a lot about his ideologies for a better country, irrespective of the promises he has failed on.

That's it in a nutshell. Spoke recently to a guy who thinks that Bachmann and Palin are fine, fine people and intelligent because they think that gay marriage should be illegal.
 
The problem comes to the word "marriage". The definition of marriage has existed for thousands of years as man and wife, the UK seems to have a good system (though the Gay movements are still pressing for the word marriage) with Civil Partnerships. All the same rights, obligations and ceremony as marriage, but for gay people.

When you call it gay marriage, you open a big can of worms, just for starters, can you imagine the Imam, catholic Priest or Rabbi being told he has to perform marriage ceremonies for 2 men/2 women.

In America gays are not allowed to file a joint return tax, receive a partner's health insurance, receive partner's tax benefit if he/she is a veteran who dies or visit a dying partner's deathbed, because they are not married.

Why are the rights of heterosexuals greater than the rights of gays? Are we better then them? Smarter, stronger?

Nonsense. The definition has also included Polygamy and polyandry as well as group marriages.

This is a big fat red herring.

No Imam or priest or Rabbi is obliged (in law) to conduct the wedding of any heterosexual couple, why should that suddenly change for a homosexual couples?

Why should it be called something different? No religion has got a patent on the word or term marriage. It has existed as you said long before the big 3 religions spread accross the globe. Look at countries that have made marriage available to gay people. South Africa, Denmar...Netherlands......have god destroyed our beloved country with fire and brimstone? No! Why are straight people so scared of us having the same privelage as they have?

I have no problem with gay/les relationships.

The reason it should not be called "marriage" is because marriage means the forming of a partnership to recreate.
It regulates society that you care for those produced as a result of the human being's craving for fornication. (wasn't that well put?)

What is wrong calling it anything else but marriage if you only want the rights of marriage? You can't produce offspring.
Please don't flame me with adoption.

I am sorry...I was under the impression that marriage is when two people love each other and want to make a life long commitment and share it with their friends and family. I had no idea the sole purpose of marriage was to pump out babies into a already over crowded world.

And you are wrong...we can produce off spring...get a willing lesbian to put up her womb for rent and viola. We are not infertile.

Buuut what if a married couple can't/don't want to have kids? That's still a marriage, it really is. It's a little narrow to define marriage as "the way to have babies".

Also:

(1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage <same-sex marriage>

To make it nice in our culture we add all the lovy dovy stuff. Others organice marriage for various reasons.
Good families
Good for peace/war with royalty.
But in the end it is to continue the human race in a organized manner.

Sure. If you agree infertile heterosexual people are not allowed to be married too.
If not, hey we know how you feel about gays, regardless of what you say.
 
Yeah, this "produce offspring" bit is total BS. Plenty of straight people get married and never have kids.

I think any marriage is a bad idea, but why deny it to gay people? Seriously, what effect would it have on anyone except those involved?

It could be argued that god is destroying SA with deployments and cadres ... ;)
