Washington - Barack Obama became the first US president on Wednesday to say publicly he was in favor of same-sex marriage, in a high-stakes intervention in a pre-election debate roiling American politics.

.................

Obama, who previously backed strong protections for gay and lesbian couples but not full marriage, said his position had evolved after talking to his two daughters Malia and Sasha who had friends who had same-sex parents.

I'm sure Republicans will have a fit over the use of that word too.

But well done Obama, very progressive of you!
Every human being has rights regardless of whether of your race, background, nationality, hair colour, clothes music taste and sexual orientation.

It is about time he spoke out :).

Some good news to read on this wonderfully quiet thursday morning :D.

So he supports an opinion that any rational educated person would have?... this should not be news.

I agree. But to say that is going to cost political points, he knows this. That's why he mentioned the golden rule to win over some Christians. Honestly if you are from a country where half the population (48% according to Gallup) is against gay marriage it would have been in his interests not to say anything.

It takes balls, and I can actually commend him for this..

He is only strengthening his base fo re-election, those who oppose gay-marriage would not vote for him anyway.

Who is it that has a vendetta against Fox News?

What's not wrong with Fox News?

Maybe. Probably. Doesn't change the fact that its a bold move from a President who doesn't have the balls to stand up for himself or his own party. And not all Democrats are pro gay. I'm in the US right now, people are, varied. They stand for liberal issues but are still against homosexuals etc.

Looks like he just lost the elections then. This is still a big issue in USA, might even become a big issue in SA again.

It's a risky thing to do - but definitely laudable. Big up President Obama.

It's obviously not as if he's issued an executive order making it legal but when someone that high up publicly comes out pro gay marriage, it's going to lead to some discourse somewhere. Unfortunately, some of his Christian-conservative (?) Black base have been muttering about the whole thing and aren't certain if they're going to vote for him again.

Whatever Obama does or does not achieve, he will be remembered for his willingness to make this statement. He has shown today that he is his own man, not just a political pawn. Truly a landmark for civil rights.

Exactly, he isn't losing votes. Besides christians that would vote for obama are not those dumb idiotic ones who hate gays.

In all honesty though it doesn't matter what obama says or does, he will be reelected.

Obama won't be remembered for civil rights, if anything he will be remembered for taking them away.
