Hi there,

I've decided (finally) to get broadband at my pad, so I'm looking at my options. Wireless is definitely not in the list, so I'm looking at ADSL. The problem is I'm not to clued up on the pros/cons, the right modem to buy, the speed, the cap etc.

I'd like to be able to download about +/- 30gb a month internationally and nationally, at 50kb/s.

Also, I heard that the SAIX backbone is alot faster than the IS one, so I'll probably take that into consideration with regards to my choice of ISP?

Can you guys please give me a few heads up with regards to my concerns? I don't have unlimited funds either, but then again I don't want something that I'll regret later. What? Who? How Much?

I'd really appreciate your input.

Well in my personal experience with online gaming, if you're going to get the line for playing games then it I would advise ADSL, compared to Wireless, it's more stable.

30 gigs a month INTERNATIONAL for 50kb/s for a _decent_ price. Wrong country my friend =/

If none of the above then I would go for Wireless much better for downloading and browsing.

Wireless, um i dont think so unless u have like R10k to piss away.

yep adsl def. for gaming , wireless is def. way expensive for most people
go for a I.S account beause you get 30gigs local bandwidth ! :)

Sentech MyWireless 256 @ R699pm (excl modem) gives you a 20GB cap, unshapped
Dont know about gaming, but Skype works great on it as does Remote Desktop to the USA
 
My bad, I didn't realise there wasn't a feasible option like that for international bandwidth.

Yeah I'm definitely looking for an online gaming solution, but also for pretty big downloads. I'll be using torrents mostly I guess.

So what bandwidth/cap options do we have in SA that I can choose from?
 
if you want a 30GB cap then you should go for All You Can Eat, R680 per month. along with that i'd recommend the DSL 384K option - another R350. you're looking at over R1000 per month for what you want.
 
Or go for the option I listed. It costs much less than R1000 (although you only get 20GB instead of 30Gb. But it is a softcap, so you wont be automatically disconnected when you reach your cap. You will get a phone call asking you to slow down)

And the All You Can Eat service is shapped (as far as I know), so your torrents will be very slow. MyWireless is unshapped, so it will download full speed

Can anyone comment on whether gaming works on MyWi. I cant imagine why it wouldn't if remote desktop works

wrong.

Telkom/SAIX shapes bandwidth, not ISP's who are just resellers of SAIX accounts.

put your router in Bridge mode and you won't need to do any port forwarding/mapping. you will be literally unshaped.

i think let the ADSL boys answer this one.. ;)

one other thing, what does "shapped" and "unshapped" mean? i hope they're typos.

jstrike gaming does not work with anything wireless


pings of 300 or more is no good for gaming

allyoucaneat option for 30 gigs is over
saol have 30 gigs for 999 but that will change once everyone signs up


i think its marketing ploy to suck ppl in

He'll need to take the time machine option for that - that 30gb ends at the end off this month AFAIK.

Of course assuming he could get the line installed before the end of the month he would be able to use the ayce account for the remainder of this month.

what you could do is get an IS and a SAIX account. then you can use RouteSentry to use 2 accounts at once - IS for local and SAIX for international. i'd go with a Telkom Internet account as you can definately squeeze mroe than 2/3 GB out of them (depending on which you go for, 2 GB probably best).

there are some good local torrent sites.
 
Alright so if the AllYouCanEat option basically no longer exists, do I have any other option other than the SAOL @ R999? I'm not even considering wireless because of previous bad experiences (with multiple friends and clients).

To be honest I'm looking at a maximum of about R1200p/m for everything (obviously not including the modem or any once off costs)

Any ideas?
