Hi,

I'm a pale developer-slash-test automator currently resident overseas. I'm considering heading back to SA to work for a couple of years to gain deeper experience, and spend some time with family (I'm a citizen), ideally as a java or mobile developer (android).

What's the market like at the moment? Buoyant/flat? What's the outlook like over the next, say, 18months? Is it realistic to assume I can get a couple of interviews from overseas?

I'm familiar with the job sites, but have also had my issues with recruitment companies over there (no responses, lost CVs, failed promises of interviews, etc...eish). Can anyone recommend any good, reputable, stable companies who are recruiting directly?

there is a huge demand for quality developers.

unfortunately, there is a huge quantity of dross developers out there
 
What kind amount of years exp. do you have now and with which technologies?

Where do you want to go work? Cpt, Jhb, Pta, Dbn?

That is no understatement. HUGE demand!

Not really. There may be companies that say they want quality developers but there a few that are willing to pay. What they really want is developers willing to work 10+ hour days for office admin staff salaries.

... For quality developers willing to work for peanuts! After 20 years as a contractor finding more difficult to get decent contracts becuase everyone wants my 20 years of experience but are only willing to pay junior to mid-level pay.

If I may ask, which kind of work? .NET/Java/?? and what do you mean by Junior to Mid-level pay?

Apart from myself, 2 others in my company left. 1 for 700k salary (10 years exp), another for R900k salary (10+ years exp), myself for 360k (1 year exp).

None of us had trouble finding work.

Jeez, I have reservations telling people I know well how much I earn. Never mind an open forum

Yep, I don't give a crap. It helps people to know what they should earn. This not talking about your salary in IT is crap. Everyone should know so that they know what they should be earning.

I wish...

I do try to know as much about the systems I work on as possible, my boss keeps reminding me that I'm a bargain (CTC wise) :p

But it depends a lot on the environment I guess, the guys I work with are seriously experienced (10+ years) with huge companies (US and Local). Have learned more from those guys in my 1+ year than any of the previous years in varsity...

Our company has all sorts and the guys that are really good have done every technology & language that was ever popular. From them I learned most of what I preach :)

Junior to mid-level : R30K to R50K per month

Not sure where you and your mates find these companies. Are you maybe BEE's? Very few companies are wiling to pay more than R650K for whites these days.
My skills are C++/C# (and Delphi/SQL/ a few others) and I am not just a coder as most people these days.

Nope, not BEE. But I think the technologies are the problem. We are on the Java side.

But that range does seem correct for Gauteng, at least from what I've seen/heard.

It is:
  1. An online privacy / identity protection thing
  2. Nobody's business what I earn
 
Wish I pursued developing instead of design... much easier to land a job and pays more.
