can i run torrents and sabnz on rasberry pi?

so i got my email today, seems im getting my one soon :P

wondering if it can replace my dl pc, all that it need to do is run sabnz and utorrent or any torrent app i can change settings :p

will save to usb drive.

hope someone tried it before :P
 
I'm pretty sure you will be able to..

It will require hacking and slashing to make it work but I don't see why not.
 
I'm sure it can...a *nix install without GUI can run on anything & can torrent/nzb.

Make sure thats a usb hdd not a flash....else youll kill the flash asap.
 
its probably about the amount of small writes - cause they even recommend running some VMWare ESxi servers off flash.. will have to look into this, cause im loading up something similar onto my microserver tomorrow -_-!

Yes. Essentially it doesn't spread the writes out like the new SSD do. So when you use it in a long term PC type setup the same "portions" of the flash get hit over & over again. Each portion has a limited number of writes it can do.

In normal use you'll never hit one of those. Its just for the long term uses that its no good.

Flash is pretty cheap though...so saying screw it & hoping it last a while is a viable option.

Have not tried it but I can tell you that it will work fine. utorrent is a bit heavy, why not go for transmission.
 
You can install linux on it and I see it comes bundled with python by mistake. Many bittorent clients can run on python % perl.

I was thinking... if you want something headless. You can install a mini LAMP server with mysql and torrentflux http://www.torrentflux.com/

Then you can manage your downloads through a browser and SSH into it for service management.

I'm actually thinking of getting myself a fair few of these things and deploying them all through my home network to do simple jobs like running torrents/sabnzbd/sickbeard/etc etc...

Also why not see what the option of using a network drive as your "workspace" for utorrent and sabnzbd is like, that might negate the write issues you could run into with flash drives.
 
God damn I can't wait to get my little Raspberry... I'm going to use it as an FTP client to download to my FreeNAS. Will save a bit on having my main rig on all the time.
 
Perhaps look at www.openelec.tv
You can run it on your tv to watch your downloads. It has a plugin that comes with sickbeard and sanzbd
I think there is a torrent app on it too, transmission

So downloading and watching happening on one little tiny pc :)

Don't need another media player. I have an Antec HTPC in the lounge and a HDRyan PlayOnHD in the bedroom. I have a TV in the spare bedroom but I'm just going to use these CAT to HDMI converters I bought to manage that. I just want something that will just sit there, use as little power as possible and download to my HP Microserver running FreeNAS.

Why do you need multiple devices to do that?

Surely the download can just run on the FreeNAS server? or is there some reason why a separate device is superior?

Those were just a few examples and they will run on a single one...

But there are quite a few other things I want to do with them, network monitoring, frontends into a sql server that I pump a crap load of data into...

I will be play with one interfaced to a touch screen, could make a nice "inexpensive" home controller.
