Anyone else taken the time to play around with this?
Sending locally its not that different to standard rates as far as I can see (R0.712) but when you look internationally the savings would seem to be more substantial (at least wrt to the vodacom rate of ZAR1.74).
UK - ZAR 0.612
USA - ZAR 0.689

The local rates are truly terrible for anyone who has an SMS bundle. But internationally it is not too bad. But rather use iChat to send sms's to the USA, it's free

What about replies? With the skype one any reply gets sent to your cellphone (if you enable the feature) - is it the same with iChat?
EDIT - I see - its actually a AIM feature rather than a native iChat one. Replies go to iChat rather than to your cellphone.

Just as good if you ask me. If you are sitting at your computer sending sms's, then recieving them shouldn't be a problem. Especially when it is free :-)

I'll keep it in mind when smsing the states - as far as the UK and any other country (including SA during peak hours) goes I'll stick to skype. Overseas rates are at least half of Vodacom's - at least the places I need to send to.
Plus - any chance to stick it to any SA telco carries its own inherent benefits. :)
I use Clickatell for SMS, about 30c to the UK and local. More efficient tha Skype at half the price.

I use Clickatell for SMS, about 30c to the UK and local. More efficient tha Skype at half the price.Depends on the operator that you're sending to - o2, t-mobile and vodafone are both 2 credit sms's - Thats more than skype sms costs to the UK.
Still - nothing wrong with options is there. :)
I see u can also now send SMS with VOIPdiscount (latest update). Dont know what the rates are though

you guys may want to have a look at this as another option
http://www.tex2me.com/more_about_tex2.html
especially if you have a data bundle...
little java program, sits on your phone...listens for messages sent via the data side. of course, you can only send/recieve to others using the same program. like msn messenger i suppose. although uk based, you can subscribe from overseas numbers.
werner, that's the frikkin' holy grail man! Have you got it working?
I'm struggling to get them to send me the stuff, I might be putting in my number incorrectly, please help me!
My cell no. is 076 686 ****
What I'm putting in: (0027)76686****
Obviously without the stars and brackets. Does it just take a long time to get the sms or what?

mooK - have you tried +2776 . . . ?
Guys, this is huge news! According to my calculations (quite likely incorrect admittedly) if this java applet thing for your phone uses data rates for your SMS's, you'll get 2640 SMS's for the price of one, i.e. 70c.
But I can't get the damn thing working, anyone?!
EDIT: Omg, bwana, I tried that and I got the SMS INSTANTLY! *idiot*
Anyway, there's a lot of use for this! It's easy to get and if all your friends have it u can SMS all your friends for free basically, omg it's brilliant! I spend loads of money SMS'ing ppl! IT'S AWESOME! I'm frikkin' happy now. It's made my week!
