Why is BlackBerry "cool" in South Africa?

data costs. the day those fall is the day people forget about bb.
 
Yep, if it wasn't for BIS then i dont think anyone would want a BB, not even for BBM as there is whatsapp for that as well.

Also, people don't like paying 80c for a 160 character sms... Had a BB last year, worst mistake in cellphones ever! Most boring phones ever created.
 
Donno about you guys, but the perception I am getting is that blackberry is on a decline. Most my friends and family who already own a blackberry either have or planning on getting a smartphone for their next upgrade.
 
Data costs and BBM. It is still the best chat program available.
 
80% of BB users are using BB Curve it retails for less than R2K + R60 of BIS, I guess thats a lot of money for RIM after their shares went down more than 75% in the past 12 months

In a country where SPs are, by some sort of voodoo magic, rendered unable to implement hard limits to data bundles on contract subscribers and where the same SPs love ripping their loyal customers a new one by sneaking exorbitant unexpected out of bundle data charges into their monthly bills you have to admit - R59 is a cheap price to pay for absolute peace of mind that whatever you're consuming on your device is covered - no nasties come the next invoice.
 
The reason to their success is their uncapped R59 BIS service and BBM.

If another cell company introduces their own proper uncapped services, we shall see a drop in BB purchases.

+1 bb takes care of my data. thats all. i also smaak a 3g bb. but i got this bb for cheap. and the rest of the family is on bb as well so it makes comms easier.
 
I recently got a Samsung Galaxy 7 plus tab on one of my contracts so I could fiddle with android.

The whole data cost thing is a huge problem for me. Just this morning I took a pic of my wife holding our son, that was 1 meg, then I uploaded it to facebook, bbm'ed it to three contacts and emailed it to two more. So that single transaction used about 10Mbs of data? On raw cost that's R20 which is already nearly HALF of BIS cost and thats for a single quick snap?

And then there's mail. The tablets mail seems nice to work with but my gmails come through literally 2-5minutes on my BB before the tab and thats even with the tab utilising wifi ( bouncing a 4 meg adsl connection ).

Folks moan about BB but their push mail and sheer ease of use with data is a big point.

So you don't have WiFi at home?

Ever heard of data bundles?
 
I have a BB, worst phone in the world. Everyday I just want to throw it in the bin. However loads of my friends have BB's so BBM is useful to stay in touch. BBM is a lot netter than whatsapp, which I also use. The R59 a month BIS is also a main reason as well.

I'm moving to the USA later this year. The day I step foot on American soil is the day I get an Iphone or an Android. I'll see if I an chuck my BB out the plane when we're flying over the Atlantic Ocean. Good riddance.
