Telkom fibre to the home (FTTH) plans

Good news indeed now just hoping by some miracle that my area gets one these trials.

On a slightly unrelated note contractors have been trenching and laying fibre conduits in this small area for about 2 months now and there really is a LOT of it, in some places on both sides of the road. Almost as if they are blanketing the area.

Wow. man I hope this happens soon... Now this is first world technology -- good job Telkom (just please include reasonable pricing). Our copper lines were stolen in 2008 and still haven't been replaced here in Wilro Park on the West Rand, I'm running on a temporary pair that I had to lay myself. Seeing as they're so reluctant to replace the copper and can't give us a repair date and are "constantly looking for alternatives" but wireless just never cuts it, hopefully they consider us for the fibre pilot project. Can only hope xD

This is great news indeed. I hope the pilot projects are a great success and that Telkom will hence start to roll it out in many other suitable areas.

Yeah, Telkom might have waited too long. i3 Africa (those guys who put the fiber into your house via the water mains) are busy trenching my road right now. I'm in Durban. Spoke to the foreman, his crew alone had already done large parts of the Bluff, Durban North, are busy on my area now (near Hillcrest), and are on to Westville next. Really being aggressive. Here's the relevant info about the project: http://www.techcentral.co.za/exclusive-mega-project-to-bring-fibre-to-sa-homes/21723/

What would be awesome is if this turned into a race to get FTTH rolled out to snatch customers up.

Next time you see someone near the trenchers with a clipboard, slam your brakes on, jump out and have a chat to them. Find out what they're doing. My chaps were very happy to have a little chin-wag.

Edit: I see you're in Dolphin Coast from your Location: … I know Ballito is having major trenching, but I don't think it's i3 - dude I know asked them and it was for MTN, but then again there's probably a few people throwing down cables in the same holes, so definitely follow it up.

I would just like to experience 10Mbps ADSL please? Well that’s if I’m not asking for too much.

So tell me, how much is an MSAN worth? The equipment in there looks mighty expensive, I'm just picturing MSAN's being raided and plundered and sold overseas by criminals.

Telkom seems to be really moving forward since Pinky took over I think she needs to be nominated for a MyBB award.

Will I appreciate the effort to finally boot is into the 21st century, it would be really nice if they used areas for the pilot that they couldn't be bothered to upgrade to 10Mbps previously, which I doubt.

I feel the new plans have very little to do with Pinky et al, but rather with KT.

If broadband could run over rumours and promises, Telkom would absolutely have the very best infrastructure on the planet.

We'll wait for next week Friday, Telkom results day and hopeful allot of answers about Telkom future plans will be communicated by the top executive at Telkom with timelines

:( Well, nothing here for us in Mthatha, from a business case point of view:( Hell, we are small enough to be classified a gated community,c'mon Telkom roll it over here.Sigh..guess we will wait for the MASS ROLL OUT,otherwise great news from Telkom.

By the way,how many "closed periods" does Telkom have in a year, seems they are perpetually in closed periods, but then I could be wrong.
