New to iBurst, what to expect when capped?

Hi,

I got iBurst last Friday, and so far, I'm pretty impressed by the download speed. I can download most stuff at over 100kb/s :D . But I forsee that the cap won't last long with these speeds.

I was wondering what I could expect when capped. Is it *BAD*, like ADSL was when the softcap was still there, or is it still totally usable, albeit slow. Is it worse than 56k for example?

Well the I think the ADSL softcap stuffs your international and only allows you local.

So far I'm well into the iBurst cap *secret how far* :D and it just takes your 1Mpbs link and shrink wraps it to 0.064Mbps hehe bascially you get 64 kbps when you hit it....doesn't affect international or national.....some people have mentioned they get 'Death by cap' which seems to be a 'glitch in the matrix' if you will and your link just dies or something.....:confused: I'm sure someone can tell you more about that....

Dude it's totally usuable.....anything is better than 56k

or think about it this way even if you hit your cap and stay 24/7 for the remainder of the month at 64k, it's better than paying R400 excl VAT for a 24/7 call per full day on a 56k telephone line! :eek: yep my bill was R900 over once coz I forgot it on for a whole 2 days!.....must have been gesuip then! :o :o :D
 
/me tries to remember the last time he was capped... :eek:

I found it usable - extremely so. I was still able to do my banking online, and that must say something.
 
Once you are capped and throttled down to 64 k, does all the bandwidth you consume from here on to the end of the month get totalled and subtracted from your new month's total?
 
Not at all, it is simply uncapped once yuou hit the cap, no effect o n your next months cap.

And it works great, my DC++ ONLY works once I am capped, I cant use it while i have 1mb speeds!
You also often go over 64kb once you are capped, when doing a multi threwad download it usually goes over 64kb, and even browsing hits 100kb.
 
I have never been capped due to the fact my speeds havent been great but hopefully that will change
 
Can somebody please point me to the section on the iburst site where the throttling is detailed.

All I can find is at the bottom of the packages page which says "Users are throttled - once cap is reached and will be able to top up with data bundles if required."

Where does it say you are reduced to 65K, and can continue browsing?
 
Just use Soulseek if you want p2p for music, its unshaped so you can get good speeds if you dl from a couple of guys.

and then DC++ after you are capped, works great, 6-7kb and you can just go as much as you want plus it has a throttling option so you can surf and keep the donloads going at like 2kb just to make it nicer. use the SA hub though, the.joint.za.net i think.

then just check out rapidshared.org for almost anything, rapidshare is usually fretty fast. And if yu want p2p use limwire, or anything really, edonkey is good too.


GLJackson, trust me you can browse and it is 64kb and even higher sometimes. you can do everything once capped. But you are right, they have removed all traces of 64kb from their site, maby they arent even promising that anymore? anyone capped yet this month?
 
I trust you are on the 1GB package or more?

You only get the 56 K connection on that or higher. on the 500 MB that does not count. once you hit 500mb you get disconnected. Furthermore the difference in speed b4 and after I could see no difference. However since downgrading the service have dropped (obviously in speed and not usage:p )

haha.. you dont have that kind of power, but you do have the power to put us up to 2mb/s and double our caps... great!

Doubling caps though.....well mmmm, I actually had a customer incentive whereby we would match our customers iBurst packages based on the referals they brought us....that was fun...and shortlived.....maybe I'll introduce it again! :D
 
Really, that sounds great, I had two friends that signed up with Iburst after I got it, what would that have got me then?

2GB of bandwidth :D

1GB per customer referral *once off and can be redeemed within 6 months but only valid for that month*:D or something along those lines.

Maybe I will reconsider revisiting that customer incentive :D currently I have a different one in place...if you want more info PM me.

* Please note this was an incentive offered from Broadband ICT Holdings, not iBurst directly.

when i was capped long ago it was fine... kinda like a modem on cheap steroids :D but totally usable. Last month i had DEATH BY CAP and couldnt surf anywhere... it is a glitch in the iburst network which they are working on and they were pretty cool about it. offered me free bw, but it was the last day of the month.

but if you actually play while capped you will find their cap is software controlled and you can bend the rules and experience uncapped speeds. but even with this trick i could still not surf :(...

but i downloaded 600Mb off soulseek that day :) cuz yeah as someone mentioned it is unshaped.
 
maby we should keep that quiter around here.. you know. BBICTH might just find it funny to close our ilegal shinnanigans down.

naaahh.. you wouldnt do that to us would you?
