Can not dial out, but can receive calls - Whats up VDC?

Last night when I got home, I saw I had a voicemail. So I did the natural thing and dialed 121. But the phone did not connect. So I tried this a couple of times and thought my phone is broken (it's a Samsung Galaxy S2). I thought the VDC network is down but saw that I have a full signal. I tried another sim in the phone and same issue. So I tried both sims in my older Nokia N97 and I could dial out. This kinda worried me as I don't want to give in my S2 for repairs since it will be weeks till I get it back. My wife could phone me on the S2 and I could receive the call, but I could not phone out.

Next step for me was our famous friend Google - I saw other also having similar problem, but for slightly different reasons. Nonetheless, I followed some instructions and got it solved.

So I got into "Network Mode" on the phone and there are three options:
1 GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)
2 GSM only
3 WCDMA only
I selected GSM and tested the phone and all of a sudden I could make and receive calls.
This morning I reverted back to option 1 and tall is fine.

Vodacom ... please explain why this happens. Thanks
 
It could be "line 2" is in use instead of "line 1".
That might be in call options but I have no idea of how samsung menu tree looks.
 
Thanks, but it is normal again now. I would appreciate if someone from Vodacom can please explain this to me

Could have just been a temporary glitch...or it could also have been a phone thing. Did it resolve itself or did you reboot?

Nope - it is not temporary. I work in Jhb and stay in Pta. When I am at work, there is no problem, but when I get close to home, this problem occurs.

It doesn't matter if I reboot or not, this problem still exists.

What is the difference between GSM and WCDMA?

WCDMA is a different kind of cellular technology that is used in countries like the States. What phone are you using? Have you logged a call yet for this problem? Does anyone else in your house or neighbours experience the same problem?

I have a SGS2
No I have not logged a call.
I will test tonight with my wife's phone.

What should the options be for South Africa?

I think my CSC might be different on my phone because in "Network Mode" on the phone I get these three options:
1 GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)
2 GSM only
3 WCDMA only

What should the options be for South Africa?

Looks like WCDMA on the Samsung refers to 3G. Could be that I got the terminology wrong. On my RAZR is reflects as 2G and 3G in network settings.

If that was the case he would have heard a message informing him that his account was suspended. I would assume he would have reported that here as it is rather relevant to his complaint. If he did not...then I will have to wiks him.

Soft lock means your line has been suspended due to a call limit that you requested to be loaded on your line or the mandatory limit that is placed on each new line for a minimum of 4 months. Soft lock is also used by the system should you go into arrears. Soft lock first, then hard lock...then deletion and then off to legal department if you dont pay :p

With a soft lock you can still recieve...but cant make calls. You will however hear a message informing you of the lock status everytime you try to dial out.

Damn ... wiks is not on ... for now ...

I haven't heard any such messages and can make calls if I select GSM only. To be safe, OC can check if my phone is soft locked (number in previous PM's), but I highly doubt that.

Please PM again. The proxy that my PC goes through really stiffles mybb experience so will take me long to try and find it.
