Want to host a database online, is domain name necessary?

I've got a hosting account and a domain name with it, and played around with connecting and interacting with the sql database. If I just needed to host the database online, with no website, would I still need to register a domain name for that hosting account or not?

I couldn't test bcos my account is already linked to a domain name.
 
No not necessary. Might be a bit higher grade for some hosts though.
 
Not really you can either use the ip address or the temporary url that hosting accounts give you. Otherwise register on of the free domain names

At least a domain name gives you stability in address. E.G. you can move host without having to worry about communicating a new address (ip or temp url). If it is for personal use it should not really matter

If all you need is a databse, there are probably services which will work out cheaper than a whole shared hosting platform?
 
no it is not necessary ,but you want to publish ur website to public it is necessary..
 
Technically speaking, you just need an IP which you can use in your connection string. Some hosts don't really allow for a registration of a hosting account without a domain though.

What you could do though, if your domain is mydomain.com, sign up for shared hosting using "db.mydomain.com" and select the option for using your own name servers. You can still connect to it using the IP address they provide, or you can get fancy and setup an alias on the existing domain that points to that IP.

What type of database are you needing though? MS SQL, MySQL?

I'm using MS SQL and godaddy provided me with the connection string.
