I was looking through the packages offered by TelkomSA, and I realized they're not actually too clear. It says you get a Standard option (2 GB, judging my the table it's shaped) for R199. Then you get an Advanced Option (3 GB) and a table below says you can get it shaped for R249, or unshaped for another price, and than for the Premium Offering (4 GB, according to the one table unshaped), it is some figure, but than below that it says you can get Premium, Shaped, for R269 - which I'm understanding as you can get 4 GB, shaped, for R269, so there's a R20 price difference for that one gig.

Head on over to TelkomSA, and click ADSL Pacakges under the Home section and see if you can make sense of it..
 
There are two 3GB shaped packages, one has more mail accounts and stuff like that while the other one doesn't. That mean the one is aimed at small business and the other at home users.
The 4GB is the only unshaped package they offer and it costs quite a bit more.
 
pope24 - they offer the Preium (4GB) package shaped as well, according to their site.. and they also offer the Advanced one (3GB) unshaped. Examine the two tables CAREFULLY
 
Best thing of all is, the other day they phoned me up to ask if im interristed in the 1024kb line......then i thought by myself...They cant even COPE with 512, how the hell are they going to cope with 1024??

The 2gb and 3gb are clearly shaped (Protocol Prioritisation: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Mail (POP3 & IMAP), SSH, Telnet)

The 4gb one is listed as having "No protocol prioritisation applied" - ie no shaping.

bwana, yeah in that table it says 2GB and 3GB are shaped, 4GB unshaped. But look below that table. It says Standard (with only a shaped option), Advanced (with a shaped AND unshaped option), and Premium (with an unshaped AND shaped option!). And unless I'm mistaken, Standard = 2GB, Advanced = 3GB, and Premium = 4GB. i.e. Telkom offer a 4GB ADSL SHAPED package at R269?

EDIT: That means not only do they ONLY charge an additional R20 for that extra gig (as well as things like 4 IP's as opposed to 2), that for UNSHAPED between Advanced and Premium it's also R20, so they're charging R20 for an additional UNSHAPED gig, with the extra ip, email accounts etc which means their pricing is screwed up, or whoever wrote out those tables is an idiot

You are interpreting the table incorrectly - although it is poorly designed in true TELKOm fashion.

The table distinguishes between "services" and "packages". There are only 2 services - shaped and unshaped. The allocated bandwidth is linked to your service (either 2 gigs or 3 gigs for shaped, or 4 gigs for unshaped).

Each service can have any one of 3 packages assigned to it - standard, advanced or premium. The packages refer to number of email adresses, web space allocated, number of concurrent sessions etc.

So you can have an unshaped service (4 gigs bandwidth), with a standard, advanced or premium package. The packages only influence the number of extras you get like email accounts, volume of web space etc. Similarly, you may have a shaped service with a premium package. Capiche?

If you look a bit future down under TelkomInternet powered by ADSL - Pricing you'll see that unshaped only has two variants - Advanced and premium - shaped however offers all three. What they seem to fail to mention on the main pricing page is that the standard package is only available as a 2gb shaped offering. You can see the details however on their FAQ page

hmmf and there I was getting excited that I could get an extra gig a month for R20 :p
