Mbeki asks UK to 'finance' brain drain

agreed - this is what was said in the article, as well.

"If you examine your regulatory regime and remove some of these obstacles, then you will get not just the diaspora people to come back, but also many other British people of whatever racial origin and of goodwill who want to work in South Africa and make a contribution to Africa."

Please sir . . . can I have some more.

Its not poaching when most of the people in question are fleeing. A good first step would be acknowledging that you dont have to be black to be an African.

Fcuking South African or Africa Beggars. It all about the money! Nothing else really matters. Part of the Africa corruption syndrome! Chase the settler, Kill the settler, Swear the settlers, join the terrorist club (Cuba....) and then beg from the settlers! Where is their morals?

In their meeting, Mbeki and Blair mainly discussed progress in carrying out promises the international community made in 2005 to advance African development

Britain is expected to announce a £4.5-million plan to help Southern African farmers improve the standard of their produce so they may supply supermarkets.[\QUOTE]

But I wonder if Blair knows about the Kill the settler, mame the farmer, take his land and break his dams planned actions. Prolly not as then he will know the whole issue is just another scheme to get money for corruption! Don't they, the GVT, feel like the beggars at the robots?? I am sure that's what Britain must say in the corridors, "The Fcucking beggars are here again"

Brain Chase away not drain

My son was third in his class at Tuks for two years running but could not enter Onderstepoort to become a vet because of affirmative action. He thus duly completed his BSc honours and left for Britain, where he is now area sales manager for Roche. All he wants to do is return to South Africa, but finds opportunities limited and believes that the only way to return is by convincing Roche to transfer him here. The interesting thing is that one of the occupations opened up for overseas people by home affairs is vets, because there is such a shortage., and my vet is from the UK where he got his degree.

And while Mbeki is away the NUM endorses Zuma for the next President!
Any positive work President Mbeki may be trying to achieve is undone in an instant. :(

But this is ridiculous. This whole content of this article is crazy.
Mbeki asks UK to 'finance' brain drain
I think President Mbeki sees the **** coming with Zuma Fever.
It is clear and obvious why people are leaving Africa or South Africa for "greener" pastures.
As the other posters have stated already in this thread.
All those reasons and more.
If the ANC doesn't step in now and not a moment later the damage will be irreversible.
There is no new Gold or Diamond rushes in South Africa to attract new "settlers", just dirty politics, crime and a neighbour from hell.

This mentality of "The ex-colonial master owes us" must stop, SA spends billions on new arms and then the gov wants hand out's. Sorry, this does not make sense. This gov's common sense is totally screwed up.

No, it's easier to point fingers and blame someone else than sort the mess out yourself.

I think the government has a nerve to try and stop smart people from leaving. They basically make us leave with their policies, drive us out by not addressing cime, spend billions on programs to enrich a few, don't build any new infrastructure, don't maintain existing infrastructure, blame everything that goes wrong on Apartheid and then want bitch and moan because we leave? This makes no sense. Do they want us here helping build a better future, or do they want us gone because we are the racist colonialists who messed everything up?

kingmonty : Whilst you are correct, it isn't quite as simple as that. They government spends a fortune subsiding universities and then these people leave. Sure, the reasons they leave have to be addressed, but surely you can see how the government isn't happy with this situation

Simple, make funding availible to people who are willing to work for the goverment for a period of 2 years after they have finished their degree.
IE
1. Non funded from goverment, - no need to work for goverment for 2 years.
2. Partially funded from goverment - work for goverment for 2 years.
ect. ect.

Govmint wants us to leave and don't really give a hoot what fails when we do.
But in the meantime, while they force us out of our country, why not milk other countries for money ?

The fewer intelligent peeps in the country, the more absolute control the elite few will have.

and this is different from others countries how exactly? oh wait, in other countries they dont leave. I seem to remember a lot of previously advantaged folks actually came to s.a. from the uk in the seventies...in droves...so now they are oging back, joyride over, time to go home, isnt it? :-)

Not picking a fight, but the article used the word "poaching" iirc...in diplomatic terms thats fighting speak, lol. I dont get the impression the UK is poaching S.A. people, heck, they dont even accept some S.A. temp passports anymore, yet the folks from S.A. still want to leave, dont they? Address the reason for people leaving (crime, AA and BEE seem to be top of the hitlist from our recent poll here on the forum) and I am sure people will stay, and others will come back to S.A.

Also, does anybody else find it weird that the amount in question is £4.5mil? doesnt sound enough to even worry about, from a gvt. point of view...why the fuss? i.e. if S.A. "needed" £4.5mil then I am sure they shouldnt require aid raising that amount.

Sorry. That doesn't fly with me. The people who governments subsidises aren't the ones leaving. In any event, what use is getting people through University with bursaries, etc when these folks don't get jobs, and then moan when they leave to try and get work? Sour Grapes then.

Nope. All university students are subsidised, amount being determined by course (and uni). IIRC (@ Tuks):
BA: 40%
BCom: 50%
BSc: 60%
BEng: 60%
MBChB: 75%

of yearly costs.

[edit]
This was before the new government subsidy formula. No idea what the split is these days or how it's calculated.

Well then it's kinda pointless Gov subsidising studies but implementing policies that makes it hard too find work .....

Can you find this out, as a matter of interest?

Incidentally, how many students admitted to University on sub-standard grades (and this is one of the issues in our current society) actually make it to the end in the prescribed time? How many drop out of University? Maybe if the acceptance level for University was restored to respectable levels, then less subsidising by government would occur?
