KAAPSTAD. – “Plek waar die reënwolke vergader”, oftewel //Hui !Gaeb kan die Moederstad se *nuwe naam wees as ’n plaaslike Khoisan-groep sy sin kry.

Dié groep gaan vandeesweek, met die geldelike steun van Nando’s, sy eerste advertensiebord oor die hernoem van Kaapstad op die grasperk voor die Kasteel oprig.

Tania Kleinhans, sekretaris-generaal van die Institute for the Restoration of the Aborigines of SA, het gesê: “Dit is die oorspronklike naam van Kaapstad.

Ons gaan die bord Maandag of Dinsdag oprig by die Kasteel omdat dit die eerste formele vorm van kolonialisme was.

“Dit is ’n proses van hernoem en hervorming. Die regerings (die huidige en vorige een) is skuldig aan die menseslagting van ons mense.

Ons het bywoners in ons eie land geword en dit is tyd dat ons erkenning kry,” het sy gesê.

“Die Khoisan se tsoenami sal onstuitbaar wees.

“Ons hoof, Dawid Kruiper, is oorlede en die regering het amptelik niks gedoen nie. Ons het nie ’n vlag gehad wat vir ons halfstok gehang het nie,” het Kleinhans gesê.

Hulle beplan om nóg van die borde van 3m x 2,8m langs die snelweë soos ’n mens die stad binnery, asook in die stadskom, op te rig. Die geld hiervoor is deur Nando’s gegee.

Kleinhans het gesê dat die instituut nie toestemming gekry het om die borde op te sit nie.

Brett Herron, voorsitter van die stadsraad se benamingskomitee, het gesê hulle het nog nie so ’n naamvoorstel gekry nie.

I hope they change it, it's not even a town. ek verstaan nie die artikel nie.
 
Completely pointless exercise. Cape Town is a decent and proper name.
 
BergieCity. That's what i'd call it.

Or if they insist on the word town in the name then TikTown.

So were all the other towns, cities, roads and provinces they changed. For equally bull**** reasons.
 
Hope they win, I'd really love to see the International response to naming and pronouncing the new name "Hui !Gaeb"

Why not trying to invest it into the preservation of their culture, educating their people on the traditions and cultural history, as it is almost completely extinct?
But then again, guess they are following the government's example - trying to make "big changes", wasting time and money, by changing a places name and they can't even follow proper procedure.

I've been having this argument on IOL, actually:

If Pretoria can be Tshwane then Cape Town's municipal district can be //Hui !Gaeb. The Khoisan are the original people of South Africa and deserve recognition; they are also a great part of South Africa's heritage. Unlike much of the political renaming, this makes sense to anyone willing to drop their prejudice for five minutes and think about it.

Unfortunately, the Khoisan are repeatedly overlooked and ignored because they are a minority; so I'm glad that Nando's is at least prepared to be their voice (even if their motives aren't completely noble). I would especially think that the white, coloured, Indian and Chinese people in South Africa would be able to relate.

I would very much like to see the DA be supportive of this campaign.

It's not unusual for places to have multiple names. Much like how South Africa is also Mzansi.

No-one is saying that Cape Town's name should be changed to //Hui !Gaeb but the municipal district can very easily be renamed and people would be free to call Cape Town whatever they want.

Again, no different to Tshwane or Ethekwini. It's a compromise, a show of good faith and respect for our heritage.

You seem to forget that South Africa wasn't built by white hands. It was build off the backs of black labourers and by pushing out and rewriting the history of native aboriginal South Africans--our fellow countrymen.

You are welcome to your bigotry and your prejudices, but you cannot change the facts and you cannot change our history. What you CAN do is acknowledge it, respect it and respect those who came before us.

It's called common courtesy and what is generally regarded as civilised behaviour.

How many of them are left anyway? Thought the last surviving khoi were used in "The Gods must be crazy".
 
Not to mention who is going to pay for medical treatment of all the whiteys who sprain their tongues trying to pronounce it?

I figure it's only a matter of time until it gets whittled down to just "Hui Gaeb" (pronounced: huey gabe?).

Plus, I like what it means :)

Without turning this into another race war, it's quite a but unfair to say white people didn't build SA. If not for European settlers this place would probably be 200 years behind the rest of the world, at best.

The design, planning, implementation, funding, management etc is all meaningless?

Also, name me one country in the world where the original inhabitants haven't been displaced/oppressed in some way or other?

That wasn't my point either. My point is that no one particular "race" made South Africa. Everyone played their part to bringing us where we are today. No one person, race or group built South Africa alone and we all deserve equal recognition.
