A 26-year-old anthropology student at the University of Texas at San Antonio is in intensive care at Nelspruit Mediclinic
after being attacked by two chimpanzees at the Chimpanzee Eden sanctuary, an institute associated with the famous primatologist Jane Goodall.

Many of the Chimpanzees at the sanctuary have experienced severe traumas at some time, so it will be difficult to ascertain what really set them off. The strength of these creatures when roused is astounding.

Fortunately, the staff managed to rescue the student without injuring the Chimps.

Student mauled by chimps

Chimpanzees at a sanctuary in South Africa founded by famed primatologist Jane Goodall pulled a Texas graduate student into their fenced-off enclosure on Thursday, dragging him nearly 800 metres and biting his ear and hands.

Andrew F. Oberle was giving a lecture to a group of tourists at the Chimpanzee Eden sanctuary when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence and into their enclosure, said Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 emergency services company.

The 26-year-old anthropology student at the University of Texas at San Antonio suffered "multiple and severe bite wounds," Wicks said.

He was in critical condition Friday after undergoing surgery at the Mediclinic hospital in Nelspruit, 300 kilometres from Johannesburg, hospital officials said.

We use to have a baboon(Pet) back on the farm use to play with us outside on the swings and so on, everything was always OK, until my uncle (construction worker) came to visit with a six pack for the baboon.

After no 6 you stayed in the house with the doors locked and the dogs next to you cause there was no telling what that thing would get up to. As casual as they look/play just as dangerous they can become, like experiencing how said baboon totaled my uncle's bakkie.(Justice served if you ask me)

TL;DR dont fk with primates, they may look cuddly but there is a monster contained in that package.

A spokesman from the sanctuary are blaming the American for not following the rules.

But here's something I don't understand ...

If it was so easy to pull a grown man into the enclosure, then it should be equally possible for the chimps to force their way out.

When will we realise wild animals are, well, wild animals? They are never tame.

And further more;

No doubt trauma at the hands of humans. Abused wild animals being dangerous? Who would have thought?

While I applaud people that work with these animals, I hope there is no decision to kill the animal that done this.

And yes, they better look into their safety. A chimp is a freakin' strong animal, able to manhandle an adult human.
