It has a new GUI and lots of new settings to play with ;-)

You MUST hard-reset your modem after the update

Just login to the web administration screen of the router , select the firmware upgrade option from the menu and and point to the RAS file sitting on your hardrive and hope that the power does not go out :).

Hi Wajordaan can you please tell me where you got those firmware from because not all firmware will work in South Africa I know Billion gets there firmware written specifically for them.

I downloaded the firmware from the Billion's international support site (www.billion.com). The firmware on the South African support page (www.billionsa.com) is a bit older. I've always used the "international" firmware versions and never had any issues. It's up to you whether you want to try it or not. If you're uncomfortable doing things like firmware upgrades then don't.

What I'd suggest is to download both versions - if it doesn't work, you can always go back ;-) Make sure that you download the Annex A version! Also, to repeat... you MUST hard-reset your router after the upgrade, otherwise the GUI doesn't load properly and you'll think the router is dead :(

Maybe BILLION Tech can comment....

I downloaded the 5102 firmware a week or two ago and upgraded and it seemed to work fine. I aint got my ADSL lin in yet so couldn't test that part of it. The interface and everything else on it seemed to work fine.

I sent an email to BillionSA and asked them if the international version was ok, and they suggested that I NOT use it, as the one on the BillionSA site is customized for ZA ADSL 'standards'. He did NOT say the new firmware would not work, he suggested I rather not use it. I have therefore 'downgraded' back to the version on BillionSA, and will upgrade again when I have my ADSL line in (which at this rate will be just after the World Cup).
 
Firmware Issues

Hi Guys

Like we have told our clients in the past: It is not adviseable to use the F/W from the international site because the codes that they make the F/W with is diffrent from SA' one. There is new F/W available for the 5102 and 5102s but it is still in testing phase. The website will be updated at the end of the week.

Hope this reply answers a few questions that you may have had.
 
can i ask a really stupid question(might not be)

if you billion product is working just fine why upgrade the firmware?
 
Firmware Issues

Hi,

I downloaded and updated my modem using the international sites firmware - after a hard reset it seems to be working fine. The new interface and ACL is much better - in fact see my Post on "Possible ADSL Account Hijacking" for the reason I upgraded in the first place.

However I can see concerns of using an international firmware for local settings - maybe Billion should stick a disclaimer on their site warning less tech users of the possible problems.

It NEVER failes to amaze me how amazing the response from BillionSA tech support is. Firstly, the fact that they actually respond quickyl is something you dont normally see in tech support. Secondly, the fact that they respond to what is not even a formal support request, is incredible.

Firstly:

Thanx alot for the possitive response uberNoob, its always a pleasure.;)

Secondly on killadoob's question about the F/W:

The F/W that is being created is to apply to the DSLAM standards, so if there is a new exchange being built or upgraded then the F/W has to be upgraded aswell but that is only in minor cases. ( Please no need for alarm here people). And also minor bug fixes. New interfaces, new security being added, chipset changes, then you will see new F/W. Just think of new F/W as a new driver that you downloaded for your 3D card or whatever else you may want to use it for.

5102G Billion (rebranded as Telkom?) MPOA down..

in my 5102G on a 512 k line in router authenticated mode i get this in the system log... and i have been unable to find a satisfactory answer.

Perhaps the supperfast bliion tech gurus can explain ?
