A Durban marine pilot will make history on Wednesday when she steers the biggest container ship to dock in SA into Durban Harbour.

Bongi Mbambo, 30, of Glenwood, worked a short shift on Tuesday night before resting ahead of her big day.

The Mediterranean Shipping Company’s vessel, MSC Sola, weighs in at 131 771 tons and is as long as three-and-a-half rugby fields. Fully loaded, it is capable of carrying 11 660 standard containers.

I know this lady. She lives in a block of flats where someone else I know lives. Now what I find interesting is that her newish car is so full of scrapes and dings due to her inability to park........

From my experience as a seafarer, I can assure you that driving a car after setting sail on the uncharted seas becomes very difficult. Mostly because the road doesn't move the way the high sea does so you become used to making adjustments that are unnecessary.
