AYCE/dotco have just sent out an announcement about the replacements for their current 30GB AYCE accounts. At the high end the prices look better than most of the alternatives, even if they are ``managed'' uncapped [I'll post the details below] ; at the low end the prices are not that great [WA is cheaper on a pay-as-you-go basis]. At the high end it looks like dotco are doing about as good a job as can be expected under the (TELKOM imposed) circumstances.

And to think that we bitched about paying R680 for 30GB! It appears that we will look back at that period as the ``good old days''. Gee, thanks a pantsfull Rikus, Papi, Lulu and all those other super-dooper Telkom/DOC people who have just doubled my monthly coms costs. You guys are the *best* (where is the key for turning off the sarcasm; oh, dear no, it looks like it's not working). FTWWAPS

NEW MANAGED UNCAPPED ACCOUNTS

We have 2 new and innovative month-to-month uncapped accounts from Internet
Solutions (IS). These accounts have no setup fee, comes with one static IP
address, have no special hardware requirements and no long term commitments.

ADSL Managed Uncapped 512kbps (via IS) R1,480.00 p/m
(typical usage 30GB p/m)

ADSL Managed Uncapped 1024kbps (via IS) R2,680.00 p/m
(typical usage 60GB p/m)

The speed and usage of these accounts are managed by means of a 10 day
rolling window.

With the 512kbps account: the maximum download throughput will be 512kbps
unless the usage exceeds 10GB on a 10 day rolling window, then it drops down
to 256kbps. When the usage drops below 10GB again in the 10 day rolling
window, then the throughput will be restored back to 512kbps.

With the 1024kbps account: the maximum download throughput is 1024kbps and
that drops to 512kbps when the usage exceeds 20GB in a 10 day rolling
window.

The uncapped accounts makes use of the Internet Solutions (IS) ADSL network.
Historically IS's network has had less uptime than the Telkom network and it
uses satellite bandwidth which has longer latency than the Telkom SAT-3
undersea cable bandwidth. The uncapped accounts are not suitable for
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking, international gaming or international VOIP
applications.

The uncapped accounts are recommended where an uninterrupted ADSL service is
required, with no cap.

CHANGES TO TELKOM ACCOUNTS

Our Telkom ADSL accounts are now more flexible, and allow you to subscribe
to finer increments. A good way to decide what size you should choose is to
look at your usage in the past. In the Control Panel, click on the USAGE
section for a summary of your account's monthly usage.

Subscription Increments Price Range
1 to 30GB 1GB R82.00 to R1,740.00
35GB to 50GB 5GB R2,030.00 to R2,900.00
60GB to 100GB 10GB R3,480.00 to R5,800.00
120GB to 300GB 20GB R6,960.00 to R17,400.00

Usernames now have a concurrency of 4. This means that you can now use the
same username in 4 different locations with each location using a different
ADSL line.

Yours truly,

17,400.00 sounds more like Zim Dollars than Rands :p

With a 1 year committment you get "unmanaged" 512 uncapped from IS for R1540pm, admittedly with a setup fee, but with 4 IPs. For R60pm more, none of this "managed" stuff, which would always apply to me, averaging over 60Gb/m, thus making it a permanent 256 service.

Not for me this one.

how can that be uncapped?

I am looking at an IS quote now, R1500 for 512 uncapped + 4 static IP addresses. Sure it includes a setup of R1500, but that is around R125 per month if averaged over a year, so call it a clean R1625 per month for 12 months, with no "window" complications.

Unless I miss something (which is possible :p ), going direct via IS seems a better option.

Use IS for local and teklom for international.
I'm dissapointed that AYCE don't split the 2 for you.
