Anyone looking to fill half of their lounge with Samsung LCD just got a new size to choose. The 75-inch ES9000 is the bigger brother of the ES8000 that we saw earlier this year and ahead of the official launch in Korea, we managed to get an early eyes-on at a Samsung event held yesterday in London. In short, if you loved the LED-backlit display of the 55-inch model, you're going to adore the ES9000, which features the same smart TV brains alongside a retractable webcam unit housed on the top edge. The picture was pleasingly rich and sharp -- presumably due to the aforementioned backlighting and the ES series' edge-to-edge design. The bezel is a mere 7.9mm and Samsung has decided to coat the frame in a gentle Rose Gold coating which, due to the TV's slightly shady location, was a little trickier to pick out. That premium finish is matched by a premium price tag, however, and will hit checkbooks for 19.8 million won (around $17,450). Despite the UK appearance, retailer John Lewis (which hosted the event) couldn't confirm whether retail models would be coming to its stores in the future. But if you can afford 75 inches of TV, you can also afford a quick flight to Seoul to pick one up.

Thought the ES9000 tag would be reserved for their forthcomming OLED. Guess they'll have some different naming convention for the OLEDs.

There is a 75" standing at the Samsung shop at Clearwater Mall. Not sure if it can be same tv.

Think the price was something like R220k.

I am sure I can find a spot for it in my house!

They're constantly increasing the size, but how practical is it to watch TV on such a big@ss screen. You'll be dizzy as f**after watching a few sets of Wimbledon :D

I've currently got a 46 inch Samsung and the biggest I'll consider getting is a 55 inch smart:)

Lmao. I'd get a 75 inch if I could afford it. Imagine watching rugby or uefa on that thing. Add 3D on top of that and boy oh boy I'd work from home all the time
 
55 inch would be my ideal size. Current 50" is OK, but could use a bit of extra screen :D

Depends on how far away you're viewing from.

Screen size, resolution & viewing distance are all intertwined. Depending on size/distance, at some point the individual pixels are going to start becoming noticable (called screen door effect), ruining the illusion of a seamless image. To combat this many of the real monster screens are coming out with 4K resolution.

Not neccessarily, think about going to the movies. They're designed with a optimal viewing distance of 1.5 times the height of the screen.

If you want a similarly immersive experience (same field of view) at home, you'll need a big-ass screen with the neccessary resolution to maintain a seamless picture. Ideally the content resolution should also match e.g. native Bluray 4K (when it comes out) will be better than std Bluray upscaled to 4K.

Of course you could achieve a similar immersive experience a whole lot cheaper with a projector, but 4K ones are also expensive.

My projector gives me an effective screen size of 136". :D

It rocks and I have no need to go to the movies, where annoying gits play on their cellphones and talk crap to their fellow gits.

When I got quotes a year and a half ago it was R15k+. Brought it in from the US. With shipping & customs just under R12k. At that stage a decent 55" TV was R10k+, so it felt like a no brainer.

The only minus is it's not ideal for daytime watching if you don't have complete control over sunlight, but I didn't mind this as I only really have time to watch things in the evening. We're also not a "TV always on in the background" household so I have no concerns about cycling through bulbs at a high rate.
