Opening and closing a gate for a living

At our apartment complex, we do not have security; we have what is called access control. There are guards (or probably better named "access control officers"?) at all the entrances and exits, letting people in and out, but they do it exactly as at other apartments (need to sign in/give ID no, etc when you are not a resident).

What pisses me off bigtime is the access control guys at the back gate. We have a back pedestrian gate that goes directly from our premises into the parking area of a shopping centre. The guys who sit at this back gate are pathetic. They sit there and sleep in the sun and sometimes do not even see you approach the gate, so we end up opening and closing it ourselves since by the time they have awakened from their slumber, I have been standing there a while, so I just do it myself. So I ask myself what is their purpose????

If I can do the simple task of opening and closing a gate, why bother with these idiots? They just work on people's nerves anyway. Lazy is not the word - all you have to do the entire day is open and close a gate and you cannot even manage that !!

I'd sleep too if all I had to do was open and close a gate.

Except for you Blu, I'd open any gate for you. :)
 
I have no problem with petrol attendants. And I'm quite fond of our tea ladies. Car guards are a different story. I fume when someone with no driving license sits behind me waving me out of my spot.
 
you could always ask the body corp you are willing to pay higher monthly fees for them to employ more functional access control
officers, since they would no doubt cost more per hour?

That is a legal thing created by government in it's job creation brainfarts, you are not allowed to pump your own petrol! I never knew this until I saw it on carte blanche.

Yeah my problem is not that they're earning a living by doing it, but that I don't have the option of doing it myself.

We're talking about one incident and they're all idiots now. The access control/ security guys at the complex I used to stay in were fccking fantastic to a man. Why don't you complain to management?

@OP, I would chat with body corp - if they are useless as well, then find out which company the "control officers" work for and speak with them directly. Usually easy enough to do as most of them have some kind of legal obligation to wear a uniform (If I understood that correctly while chatting with our security about why his uniform looks so uncomfy).

We have actual security here, most of them are pretty tired because of all the shifts they put in - seen some of the guys sit here from 7am till 7am the next day. If the ones that are actually awake are just slacking, or seem unhappy - do what I did, if it's really hot give them a bottle or two of Jive - if it's cold, get two (depending how many guards there are) extra Wimpy/McDonalds coffees. They do appreciate it, and when they notice you coming they would be wide awake and willing to do what they should.

I know it isn't necessarily right, as they are being paid to do a job and then "bribed" to do it properly (with cold/hot drinks), but hell, I wouldn't like to sit in a booth for x number of hours, staring at camera screens and occasionally opening/closing gates. If someone showed a bit of appreciation for that though (even if it is something as stupid as a bottle of cooldrink), it would change my attitude a bit. Just something to keep in mind. :)
 
Cant you just hoot at them until they wake up and open the gate?
 
It's better they are there sleeping and being lazy than being at a person's house doing some house robbery work.
 
If I got paid minimum wage I guess i'd also just not bother after a number of hours a week.
