Sun City & Jhb family holiday

I am busy planning a holiday for my family over the December break, 16 to 21 December 2012.

The plan is to stay at either the Cabanas or the Cascade Hotel for 2 to 3 days. I would prefer the Cascades and preferably 3 nights.
Arrival day to do sight seeing at Sun City including playing games and maybe see a movie.
Day 2 - spend day at Valley of the Waves.
Day 3 - spend day at Valley of the Waves, or spend morning lazing around hotel pools, afternoon maybe some further sight seeing, some water sports or a game drive.
Day 4 - spend morning at the hotel pools before checkout. Then drive down to Jhb.
Any other activites we should check out at Sun City?

I am not too sure where we'll be staying in Jhb. Any recommendations for a family of 5 (kids 10, 5 & 1.5). Budget about R1000 per night for 1 or 2 nights at a hotel, guest house or even better a chalet in a holiday resort. We might even be staying over at a friends place for these 2 nights, if they are not in Cape Town.

Our main aim for Jhb is to spend 1 day at Gold Reef City. Any other suggestions of good places to visit when in Jhb? My family haven't been here yet so I want to show them around. ie. Zoo Lake, Bruma shops, Randburg Waterfront, etc. Last time I was in Jhb was 13 years ago.

We will be driving up from Kakamas in the Northern Cape so we might be looking to stay over in some guest house or hotel just before we arrive in Sun City. We will be driving from Jhb back to Cape Town and will need to stay over somewhere in the middle of our trip.

Any help or advise will be great.

Lol, randburg waterfront and Bruma flea market are not what they used to be man. Randburg waterfront got shutdown, they revamped took out the waterfront, not bright water commons. About 10 years ago they found a bunch of bodies in Bruma lake, sent the place down hill. There is still a flea market there, haven't been to it for a few years though, so not sure of the state. Zoo lake is still fun, not sure if they still let you go the row boats, those are always cool.

Gold reef is still awesome, rides etc. Might be very busy in that period, lines get quite long so be prepared for a bit of a wait.
 
Bruma is now closed down, drove past there the other day.
 
Ok thanks, our main attraction is still Gold Reef City. We will try to squeeze in the zoo.

The zoo is with the visit if you can get there.

Consider also the Pilansberg nature reserve if you can get there. It's lovely in there, but take your own snacks, food, drinks, etc as the coffee shop we saw there ran out of food and prices were stupid.
 
Haha, stayed in the Cascades hotel as well when we went to Sun City and the only attraction we could find up there was Gold Reef City :D

Second attraction was the Bunny Park in Benoni (based on fond childhood memories), but that has just gone so far downhill it was just depressing :(

My kids will be spending as much time possible in the water. Thats another reason why I want to stay at the Cascades. The pools are heated and they have a jacuzzi pool, so we won't have to spend all our time at the Valley of the Waves.

the cabanas has a nice pool for kids as well and games and stuff at they reception area

if you have money to spend on water sports and the quad bike trails do that ...its awesome

We spent many hours in the Cascades pools while there. Life guard even had to force me to get out of the pool during a lightning storm :p

Last year at Avalon springs we were in the pools at 09h00 and only went back for supper at 17h00 then back to the pools from 20h00 to 21h00/22h00.
