Cape Town - The African National Congress will support the Independent Democrats' motion to scrap the executive mayoral system in the Cape Town metro council, reported the SABC on Thursday.

In an 11th-hour decision, the ANC at national and provincial levels decided to vote with the ID.

The ANC provincial leadership told their councillors in the Cape Town city council of this decision just before the motion was expected to be heard.

The motion is meant to scrap the mayoral committee system and render Cape Town mayor Helen Zille powerless.

Luckily their tactics will never work - the DA has a majority of 1 seat and when the vote is tied (with 1 party abstaining) the Speaker (i.e. Dirk Smit) can use his veto to push through the motion.

Scary thing is that the balance just lies in one seat... how much money will it take to buy that vote? When does floor-crossing begin? What sucks is that the ANC/ID won't admit that Zille is doing a good thing by uncovering absurd tenders or legally irresponsible activity... admittedly it is pie in the ANCs face, but, sheesh, how can they suggest that her exposure of corruption is a bad thing? (In private they may and should be cringing)

I don't expect floor crossings to aid ANC ID aliance - ID people have already suggested that they will move away from ID because the won't support ANC.

In reality its us who are cringing at the thought of what goes on in the other areas controlled by the ANC.

The Independent Democrats (ID) have failed in their bid to topple the Democratic Alliance (DA)-led coalition in the Cape Town Unicity. The ID lost their bid despite the backing of the ANC.

The ID moved to scrap the mayoral executive committee system in favour of proportional representation on an executive committee system. However, the Unicity coalition of Helen Zille, the mayor, held and the motion was defeated by 105 votes to 103. Zille says she expected further attacks from the ANC and the ID, but her multi-party executive committee was strong enough to deal with them.

Well look at it this way, the more fuss that the ANC and ID kick up, the more attention it brings to the public. They are shooting themselves in the foot. Not just on a provincial level, but a national level as well. This way the DA doesn't need to expose the ANC corruption and incompetence and be subjected to public criticism when the ANC are quite clearly doing a good job of it by themselves. It would make people question, if this woman is lying then why does the ANC want her out so badly.
 
WOW so this is what they do to get power, yet when in power they do little. Amazing how the democratic vote is wrong and can be fought against when they loose. I'd hate too what happens when in xxx yrs from now they loose national elections.
 
krycor : They aren't doing anything undemocratic or anything wrong. They brought it to a vote, and lost. That is their right. And they can keep trying. And if they manage to convince one of the DA allies to defect, then it is still fine, as that is how a democracy works.

That being said, I hope the DA led coalition stays strong

yay, AD is in Power.
Give Zille a chance I say. ANC had their chance.
There are still many parties left to also get a chance till the ANC gets a chance again.............
