So now that Telkom are abolishing the 192 line, and we all gonna get free upgrades to the 384 line, what is going to happen to Cybersmart's R100- 192Kbps deal? Or is this gonna be the case:

Current cost:
- Line rental R87.05
- 192 ADSL R270.00
- ISP 192k R100
- Total R457.05

Proposed cost:
- Line rental R94.69
- 192/384 ADSL R245.00
- ISP 384k R145
- Total R484.69

Thats an INCREASE of R27.64 per month!

does Cybersmart offically respond on this forum?

yup occationally though I think for this might take a day, two or more to respond. Mind you i think a majority users use 192kbps since it is the cheapest overall cost.

They do but maybe someone should send them a mail and post the reply here...

Reply from cybersmart :

Hi

We will be reviewing the implications of the announcement on our business model and hope to annouce something later this week

regards

Dave

Interesting....

Typical of Telkom where a price reduction, even if it was only small, could actually lead to an increase in prices for some people! :p And telkom dont even have anything to do with it for once... I am sure they'd be happy to hear it though

E-Mail sent, waiting for reply...

Edited: - hmm, telkomsuig beat me

Since I have a company budget for ADSL line costs, it would be OK for me to upgrade to 1024 now, BUT, that would mean an increase in my Cybersmart account fees, which comes out of my own pocket. What to do? May have to cancel Cybersmart and upgrade the line, and go with WA's pre-paid thingy.

I still dont understand why Cybersmart have different prices for the different line speeds at its still 3 gigs in total for all of them???

LOL this has been discussed so many times now. They won't reveal how they do it but I have no complaints with their service for over a year now..that's good enough for me..

I heard from someone at ICASA that they received information about Cybersmart's costings. Cybersmart was asked by ICASA councillors whether they sell below cost at the ADSL hearings and the guy from Cybersmart said "yes". Not a very sustainable business model.

Having read through the response I think maybe it is useful to give proposed price structure for
the two options

option1.

384Kb or 192Kb circuit =R127
topup price on 384Kb or 192Kb circuit=R165

Option 2.
384Kb or 192Kb circuit =R100
topup price on 384Kb or 192Kb circuit=R195

We would appreciate feedback and reasons for choosing one option above the other.
is the response that I got from Cybersmart.

I'd go for option 2 too... I only use cybersmart for international connectivity and I rarely go over 3g.

well, telkom is making 10 billion rands pure profit per year, while the small ISPs are selling at or below cost just so they can be in business, at least for now

and of course there is nobody that can do **** about it, that makes me sick
